Treatment of Vitamin D Deficiency in Minority Adolescents: A Clinical
Study of Vitamin D Repletion in Bronx, NY at Children's Hospital at Montefiore

An exciting clinical research opportunity focusing on Vitamin D
deficiency, a current hot topic in Pediatrics and many other fields
(Endocrinology, Orthopedics, Pulmonology, Rheumatology, Infectious
Disease and more)! Vitamin D deficiency is a prevalent and silent
problem, especially in obese and minority youth living in northern
latitudes. There are no evidence-based guidelines for treatment in
adolescents. Goals of our project are to compare demographics,
adherence and health benefits in adolescents with vitamin D deficiency
using (1) a questionnaire addressing measures of cardiovascular risk
factors, immunity, asthma severity and musculoskeletal symptoms (2)
measures of handgrip muscle strength and waist circumference. Vitamin
D deficient adolescents will be randomized into three treatment arms
and followed up at 3 months and 6 months. Our clinical sites include
inpatient and outpatient practices at the Children's Hospital at
Montefiore. We are seeking motivated pre-medical students (or any student interested in research)
who aspire to be part of a clinical research team that recruits
patients, administers questionnaires, performs simple physical tests
of hand-grip strength and assists in building a database. Mentorship
for an independent project using data collected by the student will be
offered. Opportunity to gain skills using STATA software also
available. We are looking for motivated students who may be interested
in a fall or spring semester (fall 2013, spring 2014) commitment to

BACKGROUND: Health programs represent the largest single sector within which IRC currently operates, constituting approximately 45% of the international budget and with activities in 22 countries. Field-based health staff are supported by a headquarters Health Unit comprised of health professionals with many years of experience in humanitarian work. The Health Unit contributes to the effectiveness and comprehensiveness of IRC primary health care programs through technical support, staff development, and institutional learning. The Health Unit ensures quality programs by promoting self-reliance, participation, sustainability, equity, and human dignity. SCOPE OF WORK: The Technical Advisor for Health serves as the primary source of technical support for selected IRC country health programs. The Technical Advisor is also involved in a range of cross-sectoral and other initiatives. The position reports to the Senior Technical Advisor for Health Programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Technical assistance
• Provide technical support and guidance to country health team in health assessment, design, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of primary health programs through regular telephone call, email communication and at least one visit a year to each supported country as requested and necessary.
• Review and provide technical input on proposals
• Review and provide technical input on internal and external reports and other documents as needed.
• Support country program in the recruitment process of international health staff by conducting the technical interview and providing feedback to senior management.

The Managing Director, Program Services and Evaluation will provide vision and leadership to GMHC's Program Services division and will serve on GMHC's Senior Team. • The David Geffen Center for HIV Prevention and Health Education (the "Geffen Center") combines a highly successful HIV and STI testing and counseling center with follow-up and immediate connection to care. The Volunteer, Work and Wellness Department provides a panoply of services across a range of disciplines.
• The Volunteer Center recruits, trains, and supports thousands of volunteers and interns in the fight against AIDS. Volunteers provide critical program and administrative support to GMHC in achieving its mission.
• Moving Ahead Toward Career Horizons ("MATCH") provides transition to work services through vocational counseling, on the job training, skills-based training, placement, retention, and career advancement services to consumers living with and at high risk for HIV/AIDS.
• The Meal, Nutrition and Wellness Program which provides hot nutritious meals to impoverished clients living with HIV. Lunch is served Monday through Thursday, and dinner on Friday, to approximately 350 consumers daily. Through its Nutrition and Wellness services it operates a Food Pantry and offers individualized nutrition counseling—nutrition groups, workshops, and cooking classes—as well as therapeutic art classes, exercise programs, and complementary therapies such as, yoga, chiropractic care, and massage therapy
The Legal and Advocacy Services Department provides:
• Legal assistance critical to obtaining and maintaining access to food, housing, medical care, and employment. The department focuses on discrimination, employment, bankruptcy, homelessness prevention, family law, child custody, permanency planning, immigration, and access to benefits and entitlements. Legal Services goes out into the field to reach immigrant communities, most notably at Queens Pride House in Elmhurst, Queens.
The Advocacy program:
• The HIV/AIDS Services Administration ("HASA") program at GMHC provides application assistance for Social Security benefits and other entitlement programs, as well as financial management and Institutional Representative Payee services.
• The Housing Opportunity For Persons With AIDS ("HOPWA")-funded Sustainable Living Fund ("SLF") at GMHC provides rental assistance to non-HASA eligible clients, predominantly undocumented immigrants.
• This unit also provides needs assessment and field assistance, one
for clients with Medicaid and one for those with private insurance or no insurance at all.
Health Informatics and Organizational Knowledge Development Unit ("Health Informatics") includes integrated strategic areas of information collection, processing and analysis:
• Grants Management and Government Procurement: ensures programmatic accountability, effectiveness, and integration; develops new programs and sources of government funding to meet additional needs in response to the changing epidemic.
• Client Intake and Records: ensures that data related to client health are collected according to the highest standards of clinical care and funders' regulatory requirements.
• Evaluation, Outcomes Monitoring and Continuous Quality Improvement: oversees program evaluation, outcome measurement, continuous quality improvement projects, and, in conjunction with the Department of Information Services, data management and reporting.
The Counseling and Support Unit includes:
• Assessments, mental health services, substance abuse counseling, and sexual health education and risk reduction. Support is provided through individual level counseling, group level interventions, partner care referral services, peer counseling, and treatment education. The program offers individual and group counseling to address substance use and sexual risk-taking for gay and bisexual men and MSM.
• Women's needs are addressed such as substance use issues of women of color through outreach, individual counseling, group interventions, and connection to HIV testing. Programs are client-centered, harm reduction approach to behavior change and maintenance, in order to help clients achieve a higher level of stability and decrease their risk of contracting or transmitting HIV and other STIs.
• Programs targeted to African American and Latino MSM who are HIV-positive or negative, with the goals of knowing one's HIV status and increasing knowledge and self-awareness, in order to prevent HIV transmissions. Group Services consists of a variety of long-term and short-term groups addressing the needs of those infected or affected by HIV.
• Programs are in place to addresses mental health issues of people living with HIV/AIDS through individual and group modalities, including Art Therapy. Preparation for HIV positive clients moving from unstable housing to stable housing using mental health, and substance abuse counseling.
The Coordinated Care/Health Homes Unit assists clients with entry and maintenance into primary medical care, accessing governmental benefits, housing, and financial management services.
• Oversee and achieve contractual obligations and deliverables by ensuring staff are adequately informed and are compliant with such obligations (e.g., chart. audits, quality assurance, data entry, documentation in charts, training of staff, adhering to scope of services, etc.);
• Provide adequate, competent, and regular clinical and task supervision of staff, and ensure that supervising staff are doing the same for their supervisees;
• Ensure that mental health services are based in a sound theoretical framework; ensure substance use services exemplify a harm reduction approach, and oversee evidenced-based and home-grown interventions for clients;
• Accountable for timely submission of monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual reports, and responsible for timely data entry of services by program personnel;
• Develops and maintains supportive program policies and procedures;
• Maintains good working relationships with external community providers and articulates them in memoranda of understanding;

Education: Master's Degree in Public Administration or Public Health, Mental Health or related field, is required. Advanced clinical and/or systems management degree or training is a plus.
Experience: Significant proven clinical experience including oversight of an interdisciplinary team. Significant proven experience managing a large and diverse staff and client-base and successful experience managing a multi-million dollar budget. Substantial experience in program design, implementation and evaluation. Experience as a Strategic Manager in a not-for-profit arena.
This position maintains frequent contact with Chief Operating Officer, Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer, all Managing Directors, and maintains frequent contact with members of Management Team.
Related Skills/Knowledge: Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks in a timely fashion and ability to follow through. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work on a team of paraprofessionals and professionals. Computer skills, including databases and Microsoft Suite needed. The Harlem Armory is a 50,000-square-foot sports facility located at West 143rd Street. It is a neighborhood health oasis that provides free health, fitness, and performing-arts programming for over 1,000 youth each week. The facility is staffed with experts from various sports and health-related fields that provide guidance and instruction about quality exercise, improving overall fitness, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The Armory offers classes and programs that include: elementary through high school after-school tutoring and enrichment; tennis; gymnastics; dance; track and field; computer labs; teen groups; youth weight loss groups; basketball; and golf, to name a few. The facility serves as the primary hub for all HCZ programs with limited space for sports and physical activities.
We are currently seeking a part-time Exercise Class Instructor to work on site at a number of after-school programs. Objective:
Create and maintain strong consultative relationship with Dialysis Unit personnel including Registered Dietitians (RDs), Nurses (RNs), Unit and Group Managers, Social Workers and Nephrologists in support of Pentec Health's renal therapies.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Autonomously marketing Pentec in a manner similar but not to duplicate the Account Executive within current a Pentec Health accounts.
• Creating the content for customer clinical presentations and helping design and select the marketing materials used in these presentations. In addition the Consultants can have greater involvement in the strategy of choosing when and where to give these presentations and managing the budget for such presentations.
• Authority and responsibility for setting and modifying time lines where appropriate, have responsibility for allocating resources for the project to include budgetary, personnel, and/or equipment as appropriate,. The Nutritional Consultant will provide a recommendation to management at the conclusion of the project
• In assigned territory, maintain and expand the number of patients on census for current Pentec Health intradialytic and intraperitoneal parenteral nutrition therapies (IDPN and IPN).
• Work collaboratively and in a coordinated way with the Pentec Health Account Executives (Formerly NSC) in assigned territory and the office based, Central Intake Administration Team (CIA) so as to maximize customer satisfaction and business results.
• Expedite the conversion of Referrals to Starts. This will require customer visits and multiple communications with the Customer, NSC, members of the CIA team and other functions within Pentec Health.
• Maintain and grow the use of Pentec Health's IDPN and IPN therapies.
• Participate in local and regional conferences as appropriate;
• Deliver clinical education (normally to Dialysis Unit personnel) on the role of parenteral renal nutrition therapies in the outpatient dialysis malnourished population.
• Assist and coordinate in setting up educational opportunities for our current customers in a way that supports their organizational needs.
• Assist in coordinated research endeavors with the Renal Clinical Program Director, Renal Program Manager(s) and other members of the Pentec Health Management team.
• Field based position requiring travel including overnight travel.
• Role possible to expand to meet the growing needs of the IDPN/IPN and Pentec Health Specialty Infusion Divisions
