Focus Groups on Alcohol Advertising
Are you interested in being part of a focus group? We are looking for 18-24 year olds to participate in a 90 minute feedback session on alcohol advertising. We want to hear what you have to say! Health Disparity Workgroup Meeting – July 12th
Separate and unequal specialty care in NYC’s teaching hospitals is a problem. Come out and be a part of our grassroots work to end this. Our next meeting will be at 1:30pm on Friday, July 12th at Cosmopolitan Church of the Lord Jesus located at 39 West 190th St in the Bronx.

FREE teen trainings from the Youth Public Health Institute! July – August (starts July 12th)
In July and August, Youth Public Health Institute is hosting teen training sessions every Friday from 12-4pm. Topics include but are not limited to: Tobacco Control, Condom 101, Physical Activity, Emergency Preparedness, and Nutrition (Not Just Weight, Sugary Drinks, Portion Control). Two field trips to the Public Health Library (July 26th) and Public Health Laboratory (August 16th) are also included. Trainings will be held at the Bronx District Public Health Office at 1826 Arthur Avenue, between West 175th and 176th Street in front of Tremont Park. The first training will be held on July 12th. Summer Play Street & Teen Green Market in Kingsbridge Heights – July 12th

Kingsbridge Heights Community Center will be hosting a summer play street and teen green market (farmers market) on Fridays from July 12ththrough August 30th at 3101 Kingsbridge Terrace, Bronx, NY 10463.  The play street will be from 10AM-2PM and include painting and art classes, hip hop and modern dance classes, cooking classes, softball, volleyball, zumba, yoga, bouncy castle, and rock climbing. Bronx Calling Bike Ride (FREE!) - July 13th
10:00am - 12:30pm. Meet at Wave Hill.
Explore the Bronx with Boogie Down Rides via bike, traveling the Grand Concourse between the Bronx Museum of the Arts and Wave Hill. This fun, art-filled ride will introduce participants to contemporary artworks from the Bronx Museum's Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) program, as well as the architecture and design history of the Grand Concourse. Participants will meet at Wave Hill, and ride together through Riverdale, Van Cortlandt Park, and down the Grand Concourse to the Bronx Museum of the Arts. The tour ends at the Bronx Museum, where participants will take an interactive tour exploring the exhibition. Participants should be prepared to ride with the group in traffic, and should bring their own bicycle, helmet, lock, and water.  Please note that there are some challenging hills along the route! GreenFaith Fellowship Program - Application Deadline July 15
The GreenFaith Fellowship Program is North America’s only comprehensive education and training program to turn clergy and laity into religious-environmental leaders. Through this program, GreenFaith is offering religious leaders a unique opportunity for educational, spiritual and vocational growth and skill development in religious environmentalism. Updates from Our Blog: School Wellness in the Bronx
Bronx Health REACH has expended significant amount of energy and effort on school wellness initiatives. These have included the implementation of school wellness policies emphasizing the importance of nutrition education, healthier food offerings, physical activity, and physical education. Working through Healthy Schools NY, we are helping local schools assess, change, and improve their wellness policies by establishing School Wellness Councils and creating policy implementation strategies. In recognition of the outstanding work done through the School Wellness Councils, many Bronx schools have been awarded Excellence in School Wellness Awards. Congratulations to all the schools! Nutrition and Fitness Workgroup Meeting – July 25th

Faith-Based Health Coordinators Meeting – July 29th
We will have our monthly meeting for the health coordinators of the Bronx Health REACH Faith-Based Outreach Initiative on Monday, July 29th from 4-6pm at Walker Memorial Baptist Church (120 E. 169th St, Bronx NY 10452).  The meeting will cover the topics of healthy food access, reduction of alcohol consumption, and tobacco cessation. Franciscan Ecology as Love in Action – July 30th
Join Faith Leaders for Environmental Justice and the Franciscan Action Network on Tuesday, July 30th from 6-8pm for a fundraiser for the Franciscan Earth Corps<https://franciscanaction.org/earthcorps>, a national network of young adults working to create a world where we can live in harmony with nature and take action on behalf of creation. There will be interactive discussions with interfaith leaders and leading environmental experts, designed to empower participants to transform inspiring words into concrete actions. The event will be held in the San Damiano Hall at St. Francis of Assisi Friary (135 W. 31st Street) in Manhattan.  Hors d'oeuvres from NYC urban gardens and Long Island Wine will be served.  There is a suggested donation of $35. Youth Run Farm Stands – July through November
With support from the Partnership for a Healthier NYC and NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets’ FreshConnect program, The Friends of Van Cortlandt Park are holding two youth run farm stands this summer. Buy locally grown produce at affordable prices while helping to support a youth employment program! EBT, HealthBucks, Cash and Credit Cards accepted at both markets. The market locations and dates are as follows:  3965 Sedgwick Avenue Bronx, NY 10463 (Wednesdays, 4-7pm from July 10th- August 28th) and 111 E. 210th Street at Montefiore Hospital (Thursdays, 1-7pm from July 11th- November 21st). This site is being held in partnership with GrowNYC.

Apply for a Capacity Fund! Deadline August 1st
Partnerships for Parks’ Capacity Fund makes grants to community groups working in NYC parks to strengthen their outreach, membership, and program-planning capacity. Grants range from $250 to $5,000. In the past, parks have received grants for outreach materials, supplies for murals, and filing fees. Prospective applicants are strongly recommended to attend a grant workshop to learn more about what projects are eligible. Registration is required. The Communities for Health Food-NYC Project is a new, three-year initiative that seeks to address the compelling need for increasing healthy food availability and consumption in city neighborhoods, including the Mt. Eden neighborhood of the southwest Bronx. Wholesale Greenmarket Summer Season Begins!
Located in Hunt’s Point, the Wholesale Greenmarket is the first and only open air wholesale farmer’s market in New York City! Offering fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, plants, and flowers from local and regional farms, the Wholesale Greenmarket is dedicated to providing high-quality produce. In fact, most of the produce is harvested less than 24 hours before being sold and comes straight from local farms each morning.
Wholesale Greenmarket is open for the 2013 summer season starting July 2nd! Season hours are: Tuesdays-Saturdays, 2am-8am. The Wholesale Greenmarket has been moved to a new location: 1 Oak Point Ave, adjacent to Jetro and Restaurant Depot. Entrance is at the corner of Oak Point Ave and Barry Street.

Health Department Expands Shop Healthy NYC to Three New Neighborhoods in the Bronx
The Health Department recently announced its expansion of Shop Healthy NYC to Mott Haven, Hunt’s Point, and Longwood in the Bronx! Initially launched in June 2012, Shop Healthy NYC is a program that works with communities to increase healthy foods offered in supermarkets and bodegas. By encouraging local food stores to offer and promote healthier food options, Shop Healthy NYC is changing the food environment of communities from unhealthy to healthy. While stores are making sustainable changes, community groups and residents are also encouraged to “Adopt-a-Shop” and support retailers who helping increase access to healthy food.  Read more about Shop Healthy NYC’s expansion<http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/pr2013/pr020-13.shtml>.
