Edible Schoolyard NYC

Fall Garden Volunteer Program

About Edible Schoolyard NYC

Edible Schoolyard NYC partners with public schools to build gardens and kitchen classrooms where children can engage in hands-on learning. Our goal is to provide students with the knowledge, skills and environment required to make healthier choices and change the way they eat for life.

Position Description

The Garden Volunteer Program is a weekly commitment that runs for 13 weeks during the fall semester at P.S. 216. Working under the supervision of the Garden Manger, the volunteer assists with garden maintenance; cultivates food grown for the kitchen classroom; and models positive behavior in the outdoor learning classroom, which inspires wonder and respect for the environment, each other, and their health.

Semester-long volunteers have the opportunity to develop and share skills related to growing organic food in an urban environment, and will work alongside equally enthusiastic advocates of edible education. Please note this is not a teaching position.

Responsibilities may include:

· Assisting in composting, mulching, crop rotation, pruning, irrigation, sowing seeds, weeding, and putting the garden to bed for the winter season

· Assisting in maintenance of garden facilities and equipment

· Assisting with weekly harvest for P.S. 216 farm stand (Thursday volunteers only)

· Develop a weekly work plan with Garden Manager to suit specific interests and skill set

Duration

The Fall Garden Volunteer Program is a 13-week unpaid commitment which takes place on Tuesdays (from 10 AM to 2 PM) and Thursdays (from 12 PM to 4 PM). Applicants can choose to commit to either or both days, based on availability and interest level. The program begins the week of September 16th and concludes the week of December 16th.
