Volunteer Call

Dear Past and Future volunteers,

Creative Time and the Brooklyn Museum are excited to present one of our most exciting projects to date, Between the Door and the Street, a one-day public performance by internationally renowned artist Suzanne Lacy. Amidst the controversies over women’s rights currently playing out in Washington D.C. and across the United States, Creative Time and The Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum present this timely and compelling project. Lacy's participatory artwork will galvanize New York-based feminists and activists in conversation about the most pressing and provocative contemporary issues confronted by women today.

Taking place on a residential block in Brooklyn’s Prospect Heights on Saturday, October 19th, 2013, the project will convene hundreds of women, along with some men, in live, unscripted dialogues on Brooklyn's most iconic architectural feature - the stoop. As audience members wander freely between stoops, they will be able to observe and listen in on conversations about justice, equity, changing gender roles, family, and global issues of labor, poverty, violence, and migration. The participants will represent a diverse range of agendas and organizations, crossing lines of race, generation and class to usher in a new, inclusive understanding of the word “feminism.”

We are seeking dedicated and energized volunteers to staff Between the Door and the Street. Responsibilities will range from engaging with the public to assisting the participants during the performance and supporting the production team. As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to be involved in an historic public art project exploring some of the critical issues of our day.

Volunteer responsibilities:

·  Facilitate public engagement by providing way-finding and information services during the performance

·  Provide assistance to the 300-400 participants during rehearsals and performance

·  Support the production team; special shifts available for installation

Volunteer benefits:

·  An opportunity to play a valuable role in a major participatory art project exploring contemporary gender politics

·  Experience working with Creative Time and Brooklyn Museum staff, Suzanne Lacy, and the project participants representing more than 60 activist organizations

·  An up-close look at the production of a large-scale, performance-based, historic public art project

·  A thank you gift
