Subject: Community Development in Cameroon study abroad program

Dear Professor Crum,

Since 1956, Antioch Education Abroad (AEA) has offered globally engaged, field-based study abroad programs for undergraduate students. In 2012, we launched Community Development in Cameroon<http://weblaunch.blifax.com/listener3/redirect?l=6f18010a-c409-4623-a7b9-9410748fc9b2&id=43a2bd7f-d21b-e311-bd25-000c29ac9535&u=http%3a%2f%2fwww.antioch.edu%2faea%2fprograms%2fcommunity-development-in-cameroon%2f%3fsource%3dfacultyMDR13>, a spring semester program which was selected as a finalist for the GoAbroad 2013 Innovative New Program Award<http://weblaunch.blifax.com/listener3/redirect?l=a40d8a89-68b2-4448-a9b6-de7898dadb7c&id=43a2bd7f-d21b-e311-bd25-000c29ac9535&u=http%3a%2f%2fwww.antioch.edu%2ffeatured-program%2faeas-cameroon-program-selected-as-finalist-for-innovative-new-program-award%2f%3fsource%3dfacultyMDR13>. In this new model of program, students have the support of a lead faculty who teaches the Community Development Seminar, engage with local communities through service learning as part of the Seminar, and experience academic life through elective courses at the University of Buea. Further curricular information is available here<http://weblaunch.blifax.com/listener3/redirect?l=9ff4fd40-66be-4661-bfd5-b033ea0d478a&id=43a2bd7f-d21b-e311-bd25-000c29ac9535&u=http%3a%2f%2fwww.antioch.edu%2faea%2fprograms%2fcommunity-development-in-cameroon%2fcurriculum%2f%3fsource%3dfacultyMDR13>.

This program is a unique opportunity for students interested in a range of disciplines, including Sociology, International Studies, African Studies, WGS studies, Environmental Studies, Community Health, Economics, Political Science, and more. There is no language prerequisite for this program as it is based in Buea<http://weblaunch.blifax.com/listener3/redirect?l=dd5dd4dc-7e74-4cae-94b2-fdff44952cae&id=43a2bd7f-d21b-e311-bd25-000c29ac9535&u=http%3a%2f%2fwww.antioch.edu%2faea%2fprograms%2fcommunity-development-in-cameroon%2fbuea-cameroon%2f%3fsource%3dfacultyMDR13>, which is located in one of two English-speaking regions of Cameroon.

In 2013, one of our students worked with Trees for the Future which is managed through the Environment and Rural Development Foundation. Her largest project over the course of the semester was developing and implementing her idea of involving incarcerated youth in tending the crops at the juvenile detention facility. She wrote in her final reflection: For these kids to be involved on this farm . . . they are learning valuable skills to support themselves when they are released. What is even better is that they are learning to farm in a sustainable way without the use of pesticides, without slash and burn methods. . . I am really proud of this project.
