The
Office of SchoolFood is seeking a Demonstration Chef for the Garden to Café
Program. Garden to Café is a program of NYC Department of Education /
SchoolFood, New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets, GrowNYC and
NYC Parks & Recreation, Green Thumb. The program connects school gardens
and school meals through lunchtime harvest events and educational activities in
collaboration with school administration, parents and other community stake
holders. The purpose of the program is to increase students’ understanding of
how food is grown and the local food system while exposing them to fresh
vegetables and preparations with the goal of increasing consumption of these
healthful foods in and outside of the school environment.

Qualifications
The ideal
candidate will be creative and have thorough experience in event coordination,
presentation techniques, recipe standardization and training culinary staff. A
solid foundation in cooking and culinary techniques is required for the
position. Candidates must also be strong leaders, have abilities in results
oriented customer service, and possess strong communication and organizational
skills. The successful candidate must also be able to work and teach in a
variety of different environments. The GTC Chef will possess excellent cooking
skills and the ability to adapt recipes and preparation techniques in a dynamic
and often fluid environment. Strong mise en place skills are a must as is
proper food safety techniques.

Additionally,
candidates must possess an associate degree in food services management or
related field plus 2 years of foodservice management experience or a
baccalaureate degree in the same field or from a well-established culinary
institution.

Responsibilities
    * Coordinate seasonal “harvest events” in specifically designated schools in various parts of the city. This coordination includes direct communication with SchoolFood kitchen staff, school administrators and community stake holders as well as hands on food preparation and execution of recipes and tasting sessions with the students in school cafeterias.
    * Provide professional technical guidance to school kitchen staff while on site.
    * Actively engaging students in healthy food choices and the reasons for such.  In this capacity the successful candidate must possess a positive, friendly and open demeanor in dealing with students, parents, school administrators and advocacy groups.
    * Recipe writing and testing will also be a part of this position.


This is an outstanding opportunity for someone to use their
culinary skills and knowledge of nutrition to help students make healthy food
choices. This position is funded for three years by the City of New York as

a small team in the North American and global beverage business of PepsiCo that

Coordinator in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Northeast Brooklyn Housing Development
Corporation (NEBHDCo) was incorporated in January 1985 as a 501c3
not-for-profit organization. NEBHDCo's mission is the preservation, development
and management of affordable housing and homeownership opportunities; community
and economic development initiatives and human services that effect social
change in central Brooklyn. NEBHDCo provides services in four program areas:
Affordable Housing, Property Management, Asset Management and Community
Programs. Brooklyn neighborhoods served include: Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown
Heights, East New York, and Ocean Hill-Brownsville.
Our portfolio includes 929 apartments directly
managed by our Property Management Department, and nearly 17,000 square feet of
commercial space throughout the central Brooklyn neighborhood. We own 8 gardens
including 3 that have been redeveloped to include vegetable gardening.
Community Programs Department programming includes: Golden Harvest food pantry,
community gardens, employment and other referral resources, youth aged out of foster
care housing and supports; Finding Your Future educational scholarship; Hobby
Quest crafts events; Back to School events; holiday toy drive, family and
senior trips, Thanksgiving community meal. Our Golden Harvest food pantry has
been a New York City Emergency Feeding partner agency since August of 1993,
serving the broader community. In the fall of 2013 we will be opening a new
supermarket-style client choice pantry. With this expansion, we plan to double
the number of clients served, and add cooking demonstrations and a nutrition
education curriculum.
Through the Local Initiatives Support Corporation
(LISC) New York City's new Communities for Healthy Food NYC program NEBHDCo has
hired a Community Healthy Food Advocate (CHFA), to expand pantry and garden
operations into a much broader community-wide effort to document and address
the urgent need for healthy food access in Bed Stuy.
Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) is
dedicated to helping community residents transform distressed neighborhoods into
healthy and sustainable communities of choice and opportunity — good places to
work, do business and raise children. LISC combines corporate, government and
philanthropic resources to help community-based organizations revitalize
underserved neighborhoods. This strategy extends to the LISC AmeriCorps program
where we support placing AmeriCorps Members with local non-profit partners.
Members assist in efforts to revitalize underserved neighborhoods across
America and create vibrant places for people to live, work, and play.
The member selected to serve in this capacity
with NEBHDCo will be responsible for:
·         Assisting NEBHDCo's Community Healthy Food Advocate (CHFA) with
information gathering, management, analysis, writing and mapping, in the
development of a community healthy food access needs assessment and strategic
interventions document.
·         Managing NEBHDCo tenant and community resident outreach
logistics including community meetings, surveys, focus groups, pantry and
community member interviews.
·         Managing scheduling for programming at NEBHDCo's pantry, gardens
and community spaces including community nutrition classes, exercise and health
promotion activities, vegetable gardening, NEBHDCo garden food harvesting for
the pantry.
·         Assisting with youth outreach and programming including
expanding or developing relationships with local schools, churches and other
nonprofit organizations.
·         Assisting with community outreach events at NEBHDCo facilities,
such as our Thanksgiving community meal.
·         Manage promotion of our healthy food access resources and
opportunities to NEBHDCo tenants and community members, through newsletters,
online resources, flyers and meetings.
Members will also be expected to fully
participate as part of the LISC AmeriCorps team. LISC-sponsored activities will
include:
·         Attend a national leadership conference tentatively scheduled
for March 2014. This conference is coordinated by the national LISC AmeriCorps
staff;
·         Attend all locally sponsored monthly meetings;
·         Participate in a minimum of six nationally sponsored webinars;
·         Engage in every-other-month affinity groups to discuss topics
related to the member's service; and,
·         Actively participating in two locally identified and team
coordinated service projects (one for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of
Service and one for National AmeriCorps Week).
This is an AmeriCorps position; neither LISC nor
NEBHDCo will allow the member to engage in activities that are considered
prohibited under the terms of the grant while serving as a LISC AmeriCorps
member.

·         Have status as a US citizen or possess permanent resident status

Program
Benefits
Upon successful completion of the term of service,
the member will be eligible for a $5,550 education award to pay off existing,
eligible student loans or return to school. The position pays a total stipend
of $15,000. The stipend is paid in 20 equal checks twice a month. Direct
deposit is available and highly encouraged. A health care benefit is available
for the participant only (dependents are not eligible). There is no stipend
deduction for participation. For members with children under the age of 13,
there is a child care subsidy benefit available which is dependent on the
participant meeting all eligibility requirements. This benefit is administered
by a contracted provider via the Corporation for National and Community
Service.

Researching and identifying organizations that can implement Monday programs
with a specific focus on food companies, associations, supermarkets and other
orgs that have other RDs/nutritionists.
Work with Director to conduct proactive outreach to potential participants,
with a focus on media partners and small and mid-size organizations.
Coordinate Monday attendance at conferences and meetings, such as FNCE and SNA.
Responsibilities include networking and in general solidifying our connection
to the world of dietitians.
Build relationships with RDs who are sought by media for their expertise goal
is to get RDs to contact The Monday Campaigns for quotes and materials when
they are writing articles. Also ongoing contact with RDs that have regular
columns to include Monday initiatives.
Support organizations implementing Monday programs with materials, information
and other resources. Respond to inquiries to Monday Campaigns websites as
needed.
Contribute blogs, recipes and photos for food media to cover Meatless Monday
and Kids Cook Monday.
Write nutrition-focused toolkits and e-cookbooks. Research, write
nutrition-oriented articles for Meatless Monday and The Kids Cook Monday

Oversee the recruitment and management of interns.

Garden Volunteer Program is a weekly commitment that runs for 13 weeks during
the fall semester at P.S. 216. Working under the supervision of the Garden
Manger, the volunteer assists with garden maintenance;
cultivates food grown for the kitchen classroom; and models positive behavior
in the outdoor learning classroom, which inspires wonder and respect for the
environment, each other, and their health.
Semester-long
volunteers have the opportunity to develop and share skills related to growing
organic food in an urban environment, and will work alongside equally
enthusiastic advocates of edible education. Please
note this is not a teaching position.
Responsibilities may include:

Assisting in composting, mulching, crop rotation, pruning, irrigation, sowing
seeds, weeding, and putting the garden to bed for the winter season

Assisting in maintenance of garden facilities and equipment

Assisting with weekly harvest for P.S. 216 farm stand (Thursday volunteers

Parent
Coordinator Description:

The Parent
Coordinator  (PC) will provide support to
the parents, the Program Administrator, Program Director at the Children’s
Hospital and to the program Co-Director at the Mosholu Montefiore Community
Center. The PC will supervise the engagement and continued involvement of all
the parents. They will initially meet families at the orientation then at the
weekly Thursday clinics to answer any questions the families may have and
administer a questionnaire (411) to the participants.  The PC will be available in the waiting area
to guide the parents and youth through the intake process. They will then meet
the parents at the PS-8 program to ensure that the parents understand and are
comfortable with the evaluation process at P.S. 8,  and they will administer a parent questionnaire.
At every point of engagement the PC will create a welcoming environment for
both the parents and the participants and they will respond to families under
stress and in crisis and make appropriate referrals as necessary. Be available
to parents via phone. Will assist and report to the Program Administrator any issues or
concerns. The PC will have a full understanding of the program model~ from
screening to enrollment to active program participation to implementation of
the program model. They will simultaneously have a working knowledge of
everyone's job function, including participant screening, program orientation,
participant evaluation, referrals to other providers or community services as
indicated, treatment plan options, organization of youth and parent engagement
activities including orientations. They will need to work with program staff,
hospital and community center administrators. They will provide on an as-needed
basis, as directed by the Program Administrator supervision to individual
community center and hospital employees and do outreach to the families. The PC
will give feed back that is drawn from program outcomes and tracking
information as well as from parent satisfaction surveys and family
testimonials.  On-site supervision of
program for quality monitoring and evaluation of service delivery as it relates
to parents.

the BNFIT Mentors with issues i.e. school, behavioral, nutritional, emotional,

Minimum Post-graduate degree in Administration or SW. Experience in working

experience working with morbidly obese urban adolescents, Training in
nutrition, social work, or exercise physiology a plus.
