ACTION ALERT: Call for Public Hearing– NYC Schools Don’t Meet Physical Education Standards

In the past 18 months, it has been confirmed that NYC elementary schools are not meeting the New York State mandate for Physical Education (PE), and the majority do not have an adequate number of PE teachers or space to comply with those mandates. A NYC Comptroller’s audit, a survey by the American Heart Association and analysis of City Department of Education data by the Women’s City Club of New York support these findings. This is not just a matter of providing exercise and enabling good physical health habits in our children. PE also impacts on their academic future. It is widely accepted that a comprehensive PE curriculum leads to academic achievement.  Please contact Robert Jackson, Chair of the NYC Council Education Committee, and ask him to hold a public hearing on the non-compliance of our city schools with the state mandates for PE of 120 minutes a week for K-5.  Please contact the other NYC Council Education Committee members and Staff with the same request. Their emails and more information on this issue are available here.
