INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The American Italian Cancer Foundation's (AICF) Mobile No-Cost Breast Cancer Screening Program serves economically disadvantaged and medically underserved women in New York City. AICF’s mobile clinic travels to neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs to provide mammograms, clinical breast exams, instruction in breast self exam, and educational information to women who do not make annual screenings for breast cancer a priority. AICF works with an extensive network of over 200 community centers, religious institutions, schools, senior centers, elected officials, health care providers, and other community organizations to offer services to the women that these groups already serve.

AICF is looking for interns to work with its mobile, no-cost Breast Cancer Screening Program. AICF is currently looking for Outreach & Screening Specialists, Patient Navigation Assistants, Community Relations Experts, and Health Educators. Each position requires a minimum 3 month commitment. The interns will be responsible for conducting the following activities:

(1)    Outreach & Screening Specialist

 

·         Administer Patient Satisfaction Survey at mammography screening sites

·         Recruit medically underserved women for mammography screenings

·         Distribute educational brochures at the mammography screening sites

·         Aid Outreach Workers in publicizing upcoming screening events

* This position requires at least 2 full days per week at our office and also in the field.

                                                                         

(2)    Patient Navigation Assistant

 

  • Assist Patient Navigator by making phone calls to schedule women for mammogram screenings
  • Assist Patient Navigator by making reminder calls to women scheduled for an AICF mammogram and carrying out other administrative duties

 

* This position requires at least 2 full days per week at our office.

 

(3)    Community Relations Expert

 

  • Establish relationships with local community leaders
  • Conduct a community needs assessment for a particular NYC borough
  • Recruit at least 1 new site for a mammography screening per month
  • Aid Outreach Workers in publicizing upcoming screening events
  • Recruit medically underserved women for mammography screenings

* This position requires at least 2 full days per week at our office and also in the field. Intern must have completed or  be working toward MPH degree.

 

(4)    Health Educator

 

·         Conduct 15-20  minute educational presentations on breast cancer at screening sites and throughout NYC

·         Aid Outreach Workers in publicizing upcoming screening sites

·         Recruit medically underserved women for mammography screenings

* This position requires at least 2 full days per week at our office and also in the field.

 

Preferred Qualifications

- MUST be fluent in English: bilingual preferred.

- MUST be able to commit a minimum of 20 hours per week

- A major in public health, social work, counseling, communications, or a related field preferred.

- Ability to work some evenings and weekends

- Ability to travel independently throughout New York City

- Experience working with economically disadvantaged and/or medically underserved groups a plus.

- Availability to work some weekends at screening locations
