Ask SciMON Anything Panel

I know I want to do research, but I’ve got so many questions that I’m not even sure where to start. What opportunities are there for me to get some experience? How do I get into a lab? When should I start thinking about grad school? Come to the Ask SciMON Anything panel if you’re interested in research and we will answer your questions or point you to someone who can help you.

SciMON Program Fair
October 9, 1pm – 2:30pm, West Building 3rd Floor Lobby
With over a dozen programs, SciMON can connect you with research opportunities related to medicine, astronomy, geography, and lots of other fields in which you might be interested. But which ones might be a good fit for you? What do they offer other than research experience? And what will my experience be like? Students and representatives from each of the programs will be on hand to answer your questions and show you how to apply!

Personal Statement Workshop
October 18, 1pm – 2:30pm, Room TBA
Applying to graduate or medical school? One of the key pieces of your application will be your personal statement. This is the essay that will set you apart as an individual! So how do you put your best foot forward in your writing? What will readers be looking for and how do you set your personality apart from you GPA? This workshop will break down the basics and give you some tips as you prepare your applications.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Scholars
Application Deadline: September 13
Hunter/HHMI offers economically disadvantaged undergraduate Biology majors the opportunity to work in a faculty member's research lab at Hunter College as Hunter/HHMI Undergraduate Scholars.
HOW TO APPLY
1. Obtain 2 references, and have them fill out the cover sheet
2. Prepare 1 required essay (see application)

AstroCom NYC
Application Deadline: October 15
The AstroCom NYC program is for students who have an interest in pursuing a career in physics and astronomy. The program matches students with long-term mentors to work with peers on real astrophysics research. The program offers training on all aspects of the field, offering summer research experience, a fellowship that stretches through the academic year and summer, a personal research laptop, and support for travel to observatories and conferences around the world.

The Student Advisory Board will give us input on how to improve SciMON's programming, outreach, and integration with the Hunter community. The Board will meet once a month on Fridays and will give you the chance to interact with students in other areas of study and research.
