Thank You to Leigh Cohn at Gurze.  Congratulations to Leigh Cohn on her retirement from Gurze on the Internet and Bulimia.com. Everyone in the eating disorder community is grateful for all the good work Leigh did for the cause of those with eating disorders. Somebody will keep it going...Just as when Amy Medina retired from the Something Fishy web site back in 2006...it is still being maintained by the CRC company. We here at EDReferral.com are feeling a bit lonely in terms of being an international, non-corporate affiliated, family-run business.  EDReferral.com will continue our mission to bring unbiased, almost completely error-free, current eating disorder information and referrals to you--updated several times every day.
We are proud to provide all of these services in honor of Christine Hartline, the founder of EDReferral.com.

Influence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder on binge eating behaviors and psychiatric comorbidity profile of obese women. OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have reported higher prevalence rates of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) both in eating disorders (ED) and in obese patients. We compared the psychiatric comorbidity profile of obese ADHD women with non-ADHD obese women and how ADHD symptoms impact in binge eating behaviors. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study of a clinical sample. SUBJECTS: 171 adult women were evaluated at a specialized clinic in obesity and ED. MEASUREMENTS: Participants complete a semi-structured interview and psychopathology rating scales. A hierarchical regression model was employed to predict binge eating behavior. RESULTS: Obese ADHD patients had a larger number of psychiatric comorbidities (p<0.001), especially Substance Abuse Disorders, and higher scores on psychopathology rating scales (p<0.05). The highest prediction for binge eating in the regression model was the presence of depressive symptoms, followed by ADHD inattention symptoms and trait-impulsivity. CONCLUSION: ADHD should be routinely evaluated in obese since it is related with more severe psychopathology. Depressive symptoms can predict the presence of binge eating in obese patients. Compr Psychiatry. 2013 Oct 22. pii: S0010-440X(13)00305-2. doi: 10.1016/j.comppsych.2013.09.015. [Epub ahead of print]

Persistent body image disturbance following recovery from eating disorders. OBJECTIVE: Individuals with an eating disorder experience the rubber hand illusion (RHI) significantly more strongly than healthy controls on both perceptual (proprioceptive drift) and subjective (self-report embodiment questionnaire) measures. This heightened sensitivity to visual information about the body, and/or reduced somatosensory information processing about the body, suggest an increased malleability of the bodily self. The aim of the present study was to explore whether this is a state phenomenon or a persisting individual trait that outlasts the period of acute eating disorder. METHOD: The RHI and self-report measures of eating disorder psychopathology (EDI-3 subscales of Drive for Thinness, Bulimia, Body Dissatisfaction, Interoceptive Deficits, and Emotional Dysregulation; DASS-21; and the Self-Objectification Questionnaire) were administered to 78 individuals with an eating disorder, 28 individuals recovered from an eating disorder, and 61 healthy controls. RESULTS: Proprioceptive drift in recovered individuals was intermediate between the acutely ill and HC groups. Subjective report of the strength of the illusion in recovered individuals was similar to acutely ill individuals. DISCUSSION: These results suggest that increased malleability of the bodily self persists, at least partially, following recovery and may be a trait phenomenon in people with eating disorders. Those with a lifetime history of an eating disorder may have heightened sensitivity to visual information about the body and reduced somatosensory information processing of the body. Smartphones for Smarter Delivery of Mental Health Programs: A Systematic Review. BACKGROUND: The rapid growth in the use of mobile phone applications (apps) provides the opportunity to increase access to evidence-based mental health care. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to systematically review the research evidence supporting the efficacy of mental health apps for mobile devices (such as smartphones and tablets) for all ages. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search (2008-2013) in MEDLINE, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PsycINFO, PsycTESTS, Compendex, and Inspec was conducted. We included trials that examined the effects of mental health apps (for depression, anxiety, substance use, sleep disturbances, suicidal behavior, self-harm, psychotic disorders, eating disorders, stress, and gambling) delivered on mobile devices with a pre- to posttest design or compared with a control group. The control group could consist of wait list, treatment-as-usual, or another recognized treatment. RESULTS:In total, 5464 abstracts were identified. Of those, 8 papers describing 5 apps targeting depression, anxiety, and substance abuse met the inclusion criteria. Four apps provided support from a mental health professional. Results showed significant reductions in depression, stress, and substance use. Within-group and between-group intention-to-treat effect sizes ranged from 0.29-2.28 and 0.01-0.48 at posttest and follow-up, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Mental health apps have the potential to be effective and may significantly improve treatment accessibility. However, the majority of apps that are currently available lack scientific evidence about their efficacy. The public needs to be educated on how to identify the few evidence-based mental health apps available in the public domain to date. Further rigorous research is required to develop and test evidence-based programs. Given the small number of studies and participants included in this review, the high risk of bias, and unknown efficacy of long-term follow-up, current findings should be interpreted with caution, pending replication. Two of the 5 evidence-based mental health apps are currently commercially available in app stores. J Med Internet Res. 2013 Nov 15;15(11):e247.

Denver, CO: Treatment Center News -
Eating Recovery Center Provides Comprehensive Treatment for the Full Spectrum of Eating Disorder Diagnoses and Co-Occurring Illnesses. Understanding how comorbid conditions are intertwined with an eating disorder and treating both the eating disorder and co-occurring illness are critical to lasting recovery. Eating Recovery Center offers comprehensive eating disorders treatment for female and male adults, adolescents and children that assesses and acknowledges comorbid conditions from the first phone call, including collection of extensive information regarding past diagnoses and medications, as well as psychiatric and medical screenings upon admission. Washington:
Bellevue, Washington: Treatment Center News - The Moore Center Offers Substance Abuse Recovery Path in Eating Disorders Treatment. To begin-or maintain-sobriety during treatment, The Moore Center now offers a Substance Abuse Recovery Path with groups designed to provide education, practical strategies and ongoing support for male and female adults and adolescents struggling with substance abuse issues in addition to their eating disorder. To avoid moving from one addiction to another, this program emphasizes the importance of concurrent intervention for both issues and aims to improve a patient's prognosis for sustainable recovery and their ability to function in daily life. Upon admission to The Moore Center, if patients can potentially benefit from the path, they receive an additional substance abuse specific assessment. The patient's treatment team will use results from the assessment to evaluate the patient's risk for substance abuse while in treatment for their eating disorder, and when appropriate, patients will be referred to the Substance Abuse Recovery Path. The path includes participation in weekly group therapy sessions with substance abuse specific content, leveraging evidence-based approaches and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Groups provide a supportive place to examine personal drug use, learn how drug use may interfere with the eating disorder recovery process and explore abstinence from drugs and alcohol. Given treatment team recommendations, a patient may be referred to up to three groups. Testimonial: “I have just completed the online course. I have found it so helpful, not only in relation to eating issues but in dealing with the underlying factors. For the first time I feel I have gained a lot of insight into my inner self and am developing a healthier relationship with food as a result. I found that many of the Simulated Group’s experiences resonated with me and I think it added another dimension to the sessions. I really liked your approach and am so glad I did the course”.
