These proactive dietetic practice groups share many common goals, given the environmental benefits of eating a plant-based diet. HEN and VN collaborated to review the latest information on food patterns and their impact on climate change in order to plan this important educational session.

Speaker: Kathy Pryor, MA

Learn about the latest research on the impact of current food trends on climate change. Be inspired by climate mitigation strategies, such as the Balanced Menus Program, which helps hospitals reduce meat on the menu, and discover findings from Johns Hopkins on the impact of this program.

 

Speaker: Irana Hawkins, PhD, MPH, RD

Discover recent findings about RD's perceptions regarding how the scope of dietetics relates to climate change.  Find opportunities to guide clients and the public towards a more environmentally friendly diet pattern.

Speakers
KathyKathy Pryor, MA, is the Washington State Healthy Food in Health Care Program Director for Health Care Without Harm, and is the national co-leader of the Balanced Menus initiative.
She has a MA in Environment & 
Community with a focus in Local & Sustainable Food Systems from Antioch University Seattle. In addition to her work with Health Care Without Harm, Kathy has worked for Food & Water Watch, Washington Toxics Coalition, and Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility. She is the author of the children's book Sylvia's Spinach

 

IranaIrana Hawkins, PhD, MPH, RD received a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Health Professions Education from Simmons College and her Masters of Public Health in Health Promotion / Disease Prevention from George Washington University.  She recently completed her dissertation at Simmons College entitled 'Registered Dietitians' Concern and Actions Regarding Climate Change' which looked at the factors that influence RD's in connecting diet and climate change. In addition to her numerous peer-reviewed publications she has taught college courses on nutrition, ecology and public health.  She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors such as Outstanding Educational Outreach from the American Heart Association of Boston and Outpatient Mental Health Services Inspiration and Education Award from Harborview Medical Center.  

MattMatt Ruscigno, MPH, RD, is a vegan of 17 years, and a leading expert in the field of vegetarian nutrition.  He is Past-Chair of VN DPG and co-author of No Meat Athlete.
