February 19 (Wednesday)
SFNYC Book Club - Growing a Feast by Kurt Timmermeister

Event Description: Join author Kurt Timmermeister and Slow Food NYC at Jimmy's No. 43 for a reading, discussion, and book signing of his newly released book, Growing a Feast.

A small-scale farmer on a dairy farm, Timmermeister tells the story of how he prepared a single marvelous farm-to-table meal using only the bounty that his farm provides — a two-year chronicle beginning with the birth of the calf whose milk will eventually be made into cheese and ending with the final course of coffee and butter cookies. Along the way we meet Leda, who trades onion seedlings for Kurt's cheese; Michiko, who forages the white chanterelles for the antipasti course; and Bill, whose large, thin-skinned tomatoes will form the basis of the tomato upside-down cake. Rich in detail, resonant in story, Growing a Feast depicts the effort behind every meal, the farm that comes before every table.

Author Kurt Timmermeister ran his own Seattle-based cafes before buying a four-acre plot of land on Vashon Island in Washington's Puget Sound, an experience he recounted in his first book, Growing a Farmer. Now 13 acres, Kurtwood Farms specializes in producing farmstead artisan cheeses.

This event is free and open to everyone. Free samples of cheese from Kurtwood Farm will be provided. Proceeds from book sales will benefit Slow Food NYC programs, including Urban Harvest, our educational program for children. We hope to see you there.

Location: Jimmy's No. 43 - 43 E. 7th Street (btn 2nd Ave & 3rd Ave); Manhattan [Site]

Time: 7:00pm to 9:00pm

February 24 (Monday)
The Brooklyn Slur - Hunter's

Event Description: It's the Slow Food NYC monthly Happy Hour! It's fun, social, and informal. But it's also your opportunity to talk to the leadership of Slow Food NYC and let us know what you think. Got a great idea for an event? Looking for ways to get involved? Want to learn more about Slow Food? Just looking to have a relaxing drink with other "Slow" minded people? The Slur is your opportunity - free and open to everyone.

Hunter's, in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, pairs an unpretentious, cozy setting (exposed brick walls, big marble bar) and a straightforward menu with enough subtlety and refinement to satisfy any discerning foodie. Their cuisine blends New American, French, and Italian influences and their focused menu changes seasonally, in order to highlight of-the-moment produce and game. With starters including a cheese board from neighbor Stinky Bklyn, house-made pastas, and mains like organic roasted chicken, Hunter's is the kind of Slow Food-friendly restaurant that every neighborhood should have. Even their cocktail menu — creatively named with drinks like the "Katniss Everdeen" and the "Honey Badger" — features local spirits makers like Brooklyn Gin and Brooklyn Republic Vodka.

We hope to see you there.

Your Food Your Fight

The Farm Bill Everyone Can Hate

After a long and painful process, that included the unprecedented expiration of the last Farm Bill with no successor, we finally are a presidential signature away from a comprehensive Farm Bill that, at best, is bitter sweet — accomplishing some and failing on much.
