Title:                             Community Nutrition Intern

Reports to:                   Associate Director of Community Nutrition

Locations:                    252 w 116^th st and 39 Broadway 

Time:                            Minimum of 14 hours weekly.  21 preferred *

Compensation:            This is an unpaid internship opportunity

 

Primary Purpose of Internship

The Community Nutrition Intern will work directly with the Associate Director of Community Nutrition. This position will allow an intern to work with all aspects of the food pantry and soup kitchen, while exploring the different avenues Community Nutrition has to offer. Interns will gain experience in food service/production, menu planning and development, and nutrition education.

 

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

·         Development of nutrition outreach tools, such as newsletters, pantry and kitchen bulletin boards, handouts, etc.

·         Conduct weekly nutrition education sessions to Seniors.

·         Participate in nutrition outreach in the community via workshops and cooking demonstrations.

·         Assist with projects pertaining to CookShop and Just Say Yes for Fruits and Vegetables programs.

·         Assist with inventory management.

·         Perform basic office tasks as assigned, such as typing, filing, photocopying and faxing.

·         Work beside volunteers and staff to distribute pantry goods to the community.

·         Help to prepare and distribute meals at the Community Kitchen.

·         Analyze recipes using nutrition analysis software.

 

Qualifications

·         Interest or background in nutrition, preferably with a Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, medicine or public health or currently enrolled in such program.

·         Ability to work independently under the supervision of the Associate Director of Community Nutrition.

·         Strong listening skills, oral and written communication skills, the ability to follow directions, as well as not being afraid to ask questions are all required to perform this role.
