Public Health Association of New York City
Ninth Annual Student Conference
Saturday April 26, 2014

Call for Abstracts

For over 75 years, the Public Health Association of New York City (PHANYC) has been committed to improving the health and living conditions of all New Yorkers.  As the oldest and largest independent organization of public health professionals in the city, PHANYC achieves this mission through education, science-based research and advocacy. In 2006, the PHANYC Student & New Professionals Committee held its first student conference as a way to involve students in PHANYC’s advocacy and education efforts, as well as with the broader public health discussion in New York City.

On Saturday April 26, 2014 the PHANYC Student & New Professionals Committee is holding its Ninth Annual PHANYC Student Conference at CUNY School of Public Health at Hunter College at 2180 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10035 in Manhattan.  The purpose of this conference is to bring together students of public health in the New York City area to present their work and to hear about the work of their colleagues.  This is also an excellent opportunity for students to gain practical experience in presenting their research to their peers in an intimate setting.

Abstracts of 500 words (maximum) for presentations are welcome from undergraduate and graduate students working on research papers in urban public health issues.  Topics that will be considered include, but are not limited to, the following:

Health disparities in urban areas, social justice, sociology of health and public health, community partnerships, housing, environmental and occupational health, tobacco, mental health, nutrition, asthma, diabetes, cancer prevention, health literacy, health communication, alcohol dependence and drug use, HIV and AIDS, sexual and reproductive health, childhood and adolescent health, public health policy and management issues.

Submissions: We are accepting abstracts of up to 500 words.  Abstracts should be organized with the following sections: Background, Methods, Findings, Conclusions, and Policy Implications. Individual papers will be grouped thematically on panels with other papers.

Deadline: The deadline for abstract submission is March 29, 2014

Send your abstract, the title of your presentation, your university and degree affiliation, and your contact information (name, mailing address, and e-mail address) as a Word document to [log in to unmask].  Please specify in your e-mail what stage you expect your research to reach by the time of the conference.  Also please specify whether you will need any special equipment for your presentation (such as overhead projector, Power Point capability).

Review Process: All proposals will go through a review process.  Notification of the status of the submissions will be made by April 1, 2014

All participants must be current members of PHANYC, though you may join upon acceptance of your presentation.  Once the abstract is accepted, you are committed to present your research at the day of the conference.
