The SUNY College of Optometry is proud to offer the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) Spring Internship and Summer Academic Program for underrepresented and/or economically disadvantaged college students (freshman to seniors). The Spring Internship allows students to experience and learn about the field of optometry while shadowing optometrists at our University Eye Center, going on field trips, conducting research projects and learning from special lectures. Program Dates: May 27, 2014 to June 6, 2014 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm) The Summer Academic Program –“Introduction to Vision and Optometry.” This course is considered to be a “pre-first year optometry” and “gateway course” and will be taught by SUNY Optometry faculty. This course provides an overview of exciting topics in vision science and optometry. Students will be introduced to basic ocular anatomy and physiology, visual perception and visual neuroscience. They will also learn and discuss diseases and conditions commonly seen in clinical practice and will have the opportunity to observe clinical eye care in the University Eye Center. Students may be able to transfer two graduate level credits to their home institutions. Program Dates: May 27, 2014 (Orientation) to July 24, 2014 (Every Thursday, 9am to 3pm) Both programs are Free and Students receive a stipend and make great connections with optometrists, residents and students. A student may apply to both programs and be accepted to one or both programs. Eligibility for both programs: Applicants must be 1) New York State Residents; 2) from an historically underrepresented minority group and/or economically disadvantaged and 3) a full-time college student.
