ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION Edible Schoolyard NYC (ESYNYC) is a nonprofit organization that partners with public schools in disadvantaged areas of NYC to build organic gardens and kitchen classrooms. ESYNYC’s staff teaches the organization’s interdisciplinary curriculum on-site, providing programming for students as well as family and community members and training for teachers and principals throughout New York City. Through Edible Schoolyard, kids who would not otherwise have access or knowledge about healthy eating are learning to have a different relationship with food in a positive, joyful way. The organization is doing more than just building beautiful gardens; our work is transformative in the communities in which we work, and in the greater food system in New York City. Approximately 40% of public school kids in New York are obese or overweight, and this issue is unequivocally worse in low-income communities. Building an Edible Schoolyard and teaching children and their families about growing food helps to reverse the trend of obesity and act as a counterforce to the unhealthy food environment these children are growing up in. Through knowledge of delicious, healthy foods, seed-to-table engagement with a garden and kitchen, and an experiential curriculum, ESYNYC is a gateway to relieving hunger and obesity, and a path to a more sustainable food future for the neediest children in the city. Students learn from two professional garden teachers and two kitchen teachers in garden and kitchen classes that are integrated into the school’s existing curriculum. Students receive hands-on training in two garden lessons and one kitchen class per month. Additionally, the program offers community and after- school programming. Activities are tailored towards each grade level and aligned with common core standards. During each kitchen class, students prepare the recipes, set the communal table, then share the food they have made with the toast, “Thank you, Gardeners; Thank you, Cooks!” Edible Schoolyard NYC currently includes two schools in NYC, with plans to open one in each borough: • P.S. 216 in Gravesend, Brooklyn – Includes a culinary classroom set in its own stand-alone building; a 4000 square foot organic garden transformed from a former parking lot; a greenhouse enabling a year round program. • P.S./M.S. 7 in East Harlem – Phase 1, a 2,500 square foot courtyard garden, is under construction, and garden and kitchen classes started this year. Phase 2, a full kitchen classroom and rooftop garden, is in the planning stage OVERVIEW The Summer Intern will assist with fundraising, communications, and administration at ESYNYC’s DUMBO office.
