The New York State Dietetic Association (Association) is a member-driven organization of nutrition professionals, residing, working or attending school in New York State. Affiliated with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (the Academy), the Association has over 5,000 members within ten geographic districts. The Executive Director (ED) of The New York State Dietetic Association (Association) reports to the Board of Directors (Board) and is responsible for the Association’s consistent achievement of its vision of optimizing New York’s health through food and nutrition and its mission of empowering members to be New York’s food and nutrition leaders. The Executive Director will oversee the Association’s operating budget and will be accountable for consistently improving the Association’s financial status, driving membership growth and benefits as well as enhancing the Association’s position as the authority and advocate for food and nutrition in New York State directed by the Board.

The ED takes direction from the Association’s Board and serves as a liaison between the Board and Association members as well as external stakeholders including the Academy. The ED will support and uphold the mission and vision of the Association and the Academy.

The position of ED is a 12-month contract position with the opportunity for annual renewal at the discretion of the Board. The ED also participates in performance reviews conducted by the Association President, or his or her designee, per Association policy.

The ED will comply with the Academy’s Code of Ethics for the Profession of Dietetics in addition to the Association’s professional policies (conflict of interest, etc.).

Primary responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

 Strategic Support and Board Relations

  *   Establishes and maintains Association headquarters and facilitates development of Headquarters Management Handbook.
  *   Responsible for leading the Association in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board.
  *   Establishes administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for day to day operations.
  *   Responsible for implementing strategic planning to ensure that the Association can successfully fulfill its mission into the future and holding accountability for successful completion of work.
  *   Maintain current knowledge of significant developments and trends in the nutrition arena so that the ED is able to provide the Board and other key stakeholders with ideas for capitalizing on opportunities.
  *   Responsible for signing all notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the Association after approval by the Board.
  *   Works closely with the Association President and President Elect and Immediate Past President and as necessary the Board to represent the Association to its members, the media, legislative and regulatory bodies and the general public.
  *   Along with Board and Coordinating Cabinet establish and maintain relationships connecting alliance organizations throughout the state and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance the Association’s mission.
  *   Assists with the planning and administration of all meetings of the Board and Coordinating Cabinet with established procedures.
  *   Executes all decisions of the Board except when other assignment to a Board member is specifically made.
  *   Along with Board and Coordinating Cabinet provide the necessary liaison and support to committee chairperson to enable them to properly perform their functions.
  *   Orchestrate movement in forming and assisting strategic policies to come to fruition.
  *   Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board by providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.
  *   Maintenance of copies of Association Bylaws, Handbook, Annual Meeting Planning Guide, Officer Directory Calendar, Strategic Plan, budget and other organization documents as required.
  *   Recommends data processing systems for Association management functions.
  *   Acts as custodian for all property belonging to the Association.
  *   Maintains incorporation in accordance with state requirements.
  *   Assists with the transition new board members on their job responsibilities. Mentor and guide new leaders and promote leadership to all members the Association per established Association procedures.
  *   Responsible for membership database obtained from the Academy. Distributes to districts per established policy.
  *   Maintain a dedicated business telephone line for the Association. During business hours, the telephone shall be answered in person or by voicemail with the full name of the Association. Include a contact name and number for urgent Media requests for after hours. After business hours, the telephone shall be answered by voice mail with the full name of the Association. The ED shall make every effort to respond to telephone and/or email messages from the Board, Coordinating Cabinet members and committee chairs within 48 hours (2 business days) of receipt; however the Association recognizes that this may not always be possible.
  *   Oversee marketing and communications efforts including oversight of webpage and other media.
  *   Attendance in person at Board and Coordinating Cabinet meetings providing supportive services, including request for equipment, changes in room arrangements, and other services as needed.
  *   Other duties as assigned by the Board.

Finance

  *   Responsible for the fiscal integrity of the Association, to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the Association.
  *   Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the Association in a positive financial position.
  *   Seek opportunities for better efficiencies leading to decreased operating costs without compromising the Association's ability to accomplish its strategic plan.
  *   Responsible for management and/or oversight of fundraising and grant-funded opportunities; developing other resources necessary to support the Association’s mission.
  *   Arrange for annual professional accounting review.
  *   Maintains association in accordance with federal and state tax laws.
  *   Respond to IRS inquiries.
  *   Under the direction of the Treasurer Review reimbursement request, issue checks for payment and reimbursement expenses within two weeks of receipt of requests and then forward payments in Treasurer for subsequent review and approved.
  *   Make appropriate accounting entries to the receipts and disbursement ledgers.
  *   Monthly reconciliation of bank statements and providing such bank and reconciliation statement to the Treasurer within 20 days of receipt of bank statements.

Member Services

  *   Work with the Board to assess the changing needs and preferences of the Association’s members and respond with relevant solutions.
  *   Proactively lead initiatives to improve member engagement and new member acquisition, and employ tools/processes for measuring results.
  *   Continuously monitor membership trends within the Association and its districts to identify opportunities for innovation and implementation of best practices.
  *   Responsible for communicating effectively with Association members using a variety of media to ensure members are kept current with Association events and opportunities.
  *   Serve as a resource to the Association’s district leaders with guidance on matters related to leadership, strategic plan initiatives, and finance for example.
  *   Coordinates activities with volunteers, host facility and Management Company for the Association’s Annual Meeting and Expo (AME).
  *   Assists annual conference committee in accordance with written conference procedures.
  *   Review current policies and makes recommendations to provide members with updated trends that suit the association.

Strategic Partnerships and Advocacy

  *   Responsible for the enhancement of the Association’s image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other professional, civic and private organizations.
  *   Actively promote and expand the Association’s position as the authority and advocate for food and nutrition to the public, policy-makers, business/academic leaders and government agencies.
  *   Promote continued strength of the Association’s presence in government affairs and legislative matters impacting food and nutrition services.
  *   Responsibilities to include carrying out association’s legislative priorities in Albany.
  *   Responsible to carry out legislative priorities in Albany with our Lobbyist.
  *   Leverage current strategic partnerships for maximum productivity and results.
  *   Pursue new strategic partnerships with organizations that align with the Association’s mission and vision.

 Qualifications

  *   Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RD/RDN) preferred and if eligible, a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  *   Advanced degree in dietetics, nutrition or related field preferred.
  *   Prefer at least five (5) years of relevant leadership experience that reflects measurable results with target audience engagement, financial well-being and awareness of and support for a mission.
  *   Transparent and high integrity leadership
  *   Ability to work independently from home or your current office space.
  *   The position will require travel, some of which will necessitate an overnight stay.
  *   Ability to work with all individuals on every level to promote the mission of the association.
  *   Demonstrated ability to build/leverage strategic partnerships to advance a mission and improve results.
  *   An engaging optimistic and collaborative manner that inspires confidence and facilitates consensus
  *   Solid, hands-on, budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting
  *   Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation
  *   Skills to collaborate with and motivate board members and other volunteers with the organization.
  *   Active communication and listening skills as part of effectively communicating with people representing widely diverse backgrounds and points of view.
  *   Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff.
