Council Member Ritchie Torres Pioneers Use of Discretionary Funding for HealthBucks

Bronx Health REACH is thrilled to announce that Council Member Ritchie Torres has earmarked $10,000 from the City’s 2015 budget for HealthBucks in District 15, and is the first member of the City Council to fund this program. HealthBucks is a program facilitated by the Department of Health, where coupons offering $2 toward fruits and vegetables from farmer's markets are distributed through local organizations to residents. Bronx Health REACH worked with the New York League of Conservation Voters and the Mary Mitchell Family and Youth Center to mobilize community members to request Council Member Torres designate funds for this program, and he responded, recognizing the value of the Health Bucks program increasing access to affordable fruits and vegetables, particularly for low-income residents. Call for Community Centers in Need of Repairs

Rebuilding Together NYC is a nonprofit organization that provides free repairs for nonprofit community spaces in New York City. They offer a range of building rehabilitation services, including painting classrooms, community rooms, and offices; repairing walls and flooring; renovating kitchens and bathrooms; landscaping; painting murals; de-cluttering and organizing.
Currently, Rebuilding Together is looking for additional community centers and spaces in the 5 boroughs of NYC that could use their help. While they welcome a broad range of nonprofits in need of their services to apply, they are particularly seeking a space that serves children and mothers for a project in September and a space in Rockaway for an October project commemorating the 2nd anniversary of Hurricane Sandy.  If you are a representative of a nonprofit organization and are interested in these free services, please fill out a brief survey here. Also, please forward this survey to your contacts who have community spaces that might be in need of repairs.  If you have any questions, please contact 718-488-8840 or [log in to unmask].
