The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation is an alliance of 17 CUNY Colleges and the CUNY Graduate Center. Students participate in faculty research and receive mentoring from senior faculty. The Alliance provides academic scholarship support to CUNY students majoring in the STEM disciplines, making research an integral part of STEM education in New York City.

HHMI Summer Research Internship: Marine Biological Laboratory
Application Deadline: December 31, 2014

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute is offering an exciting summer research internship in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Students who are majoring in Biology spend the summer (10 weeks) work alongside renowned research scientists, and earn a $3,000 stipend. Room and board and transportation are also provided.

Policies that Influence Gender Balance in STEM

New York Academy of Sciences
7 World Trade Center, New York City

Topics will include equal pay, work/life balance issues, parental leave policies, mechanisms for the retention of women in science as well as policies that might promote a more representative distribution of men and women in academia. Audience members will also have the opportunity to ask panelists their own policy questions.  Part of the event  will also explore local efforts to collect data on work/life balance.

Access...a universal equalizer. The event explores how students, citizens, and humans access their minds, access their worlds, access their hearts, and access their futures. Global CUNY
November 30, 9am - 6pm, City College
Global CUNY 2014 is a one-day event with a focus on the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The integration of a Study Abroad/International Research internship at the undergraduate and graduate level is increasingly being seen as a critical contributor towards the development of a globally competent scientific and engineering workforce. Global CUNY 2014 is envisioned as a combination of a Research Colloquium and Expo, highlighting projects and programs underway across the university that have an international focus, and allows for the active participation/inclusion of STEM students.

Entrepreneurial Concept Competition
December 13, City College
The ECC takes place during the Fall Semester and is open to current CUNY students (graduate and undergraduate) of all majors with a special focus in the STEM disciplines. Student teams upload a video pitch of their business model, attend a series of on-campus workshops, submit an executive summary of their idea/concept and finally, present their material before ECC judges for the Grand Prize of $4,000.

UNCF Merck Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship Awards
Application Deadline: November 6, 2014
The UNCF Merck Science Initiative is an innovative approach that creates opportunities in the biological, chemical and engineering sciences for African American students throughout the country.

Brookhaven National Laboratory College Mini-Semester Program
Application Deadline: November 18
The program will be conducted by BNL researchers and will operate from 8:30 am – 6:00 pm for five days in January. It will expose students to the wide range of research projects conducted at BNL, understand different pathways to scientific careers, and develop networking opportunities with the BNL scientific community and administrators. The program format includes orientation, classroom instruction, a communication workshop, visits to research facilities, tours, BNL based literature research assignments, reverse interviews with scientists and engineers, group oral presentations, scientific lectures and safety overviews. First-hand reinforcement of concepts learned will be supported and enhanced by BNL researchers and technical staff.
