Reflections on Health in South Africa 20 Years after Apartheid

In 1993, the people of South Africa won the right to vote and ended the apartheid system.  A year later Nelson Mandela was elected President. Now after 20 years, what have been the health accomplishments in South Africa and what challenges remain?   How has South Africa confronted its quadruple burden of disease from maternal and child mortality; infectious diseases like HIV, tuberculosis and malaria; chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer; and violence.

Hear Dr. David Sanders, Professor Emeritus and founding Director of the University of Western Cape School of Public Health address these questions. For 30 years he has been a public health researcher and activist and has worked with governments, the WHO, UNICEF and other agencies in child health, nutrition and health human resources. He has written three books and dozens of articles and has been visiting faculty at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of Bergen, and in Berlin. He is a founding member  of the People?s Health Movement
