Position Description:

Project Contact supports the needs of patients during their Emergency Room visit to the hospital. Volunteer activities are geared toward strategies to relieve the stress and tension experienced in this setting by both patients and their families.

Volunteers become part of the Emergency Department team serving in four areas: Treatment, Registration/Triage, Rapid Evaluation Unit, and Pediatric ER.  Volunteers work directly with patients, caregivers and medical professionals.  This is a patient-focused assignment that allows volunteers the opportunity to add to the high quality of service given at New York Methodist while observing and learning how care is provided in a modern fast paced Emergency Room.

This program requires a Project Contact Orientation as well as twelve hours of training beyond the general orientation.  An eight-hour a week service commitment, divided into two four hour shifts for no less than six months, is mandatory. Unlike other patient care placements it is not unusual for volunteers to stay beyond their four hour shift when there is a critical need. Placements are available seven days a week, fifteen hours a day.

This is not a shadowing experience it is a service experience.

Qualifications:
In order to qualify you must have previous patient care experience and have completed your sophomore year of college.  Priority will be given to upper classmen and post baccalaureate students. Candidates who speak a second language are especially welcome to apply. During the interview we will be screening for maturity and well developed critical thinking skills.

This volunteer opportunity is extremely competitive.
