Last December the Food and Drug Administration released the final regulations for calorie labeling of standard menu items at chain food service establishments, including at fast-food and sit-down restaurants, supermarkets, convenience stores, and movie theaters. The final rules are the culmination of a decade-long movement for better nutrition information at restaurant chains—building on the work of advocates and policy makers in states and localities, and finally in Congress, which in 2010 included a menu labeling provision in the Affordable Care Act.

Unfortunately, pizza delivery chains (led by Domino’s), supermarkets, and lobbyists from other food trade associations are working in Congress to weaken the final regulations, and carve out special exemptions.

The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) is holding a meeting on Wednesday, February 25th from 1pm – 2pm EST to strategize how best to both educate the public about the importance of menu labeling and defend the regulations on Capitol Hill. The meeting will be held at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, located at 1220 L Street, Suite 300, Washington, DC 20005.
