Edible Schoolyard NYC partners with public schools to build gardens and kitchen classrooms where children can engage in hands-ˇ©on learning. Our mission is to transform the hearts, minds, and eating habits of young New Yorkers through an integrated seedˇ©-to-ˇ©table education.

Position Description
The Garden Volunteer Program is a weekly program that runs for 13 weeks from April through June at P.S./M.S. 7 and Global Tech in East Harlem (P.S. 7). Volunteers are expected to work a minimum of 10 out of the 13 total weeks. Working under the supervision of the Garden Manager or Assistant Garden Manager, the volunteer assists with garden maintenance; cultivates food grown for the kitchen classroom; and models positive behavior in the outdoor learning classroom, which inspires wonder and respect for the environment, each other, and their health.

Garden Responsibilities:
ˇÜ  Building the garden: light carpentry, painting, installing & troubleshooting irrigation
ˇÜ  Seasonal gardening tasks: watering, fertilizing, weeding, managing pests, supporting
plants, pruning, trimming, deadheading
ˇÜ  Routine garden maintenance and cleanup: caring for tools and equipment, organizing
storage areas & supplies, keeping garden tidy & teachingˇ© ready
ˇÜ  Caring for street trees: building tree guards, improving the soil, planting ground covers
and bulbs, watering

Duration
The Spring Garden Volunteer Program is a 13ˇ© week unpaid program that takes place on Wednesdays from 10 AM to 2 PM at P.S. 7, including a break for lunch. The program begins April 1, 2015 and ends on June 24, 2015. All volunteers are required to attend a mandatory Orientation Training on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 from 10amˇ©-12pm at P.S. 7.
