More attention to county and state level food environment characteristics is needed to stimulate and guide improvements that will make it easier and, therefore more likely, for people to achieve and maintain a high quality diet and healthy weight levels. The Environments Supporting Healthy Eating (ESHE) Index goes beyond just mapping healthy food environments - it's a benchmarking tool that ranks food environments. Having a ranking system for food environments can serve as a first step and call to action for improving options for healthy eating.
