Far too many Americans develop diet-related conditions (e.g., diabetes, heart disease, etc.) that compromise health status and overall well-being.
More attention to county and state level food environment characteristics is needed to stimulate and guide improvements that will make it easier and, therefore more likely, for people to achieve and maintain a high quality diet and healthy weight levels.
The
Environments Supporting Healthy Eating (ESHE) Index goes beyond just mapping healthy food environments - it's a benchmarking tool that ranks food environments. Having a ranking system for food environments can serve as a first step and call to
action for improving options for healthy eating.
ESHE is a collaboration among several organizations that work to promote healthy eating in U.S. populations: the African American Collaborative
Obesity Research Network (www.AACORN.org),
is the lead organization, with other research and advocacy partners around the country.
Our upcoming interactive webinar will provide an overview of the
ESHE Index. During the webinar, we will discuss:
- What does a "supportive environment" for healthy eating look like?
- The ESHE Index framework & data selection
- Using the ESHE Index to create change and measure progress
The
ESHE Index is powered by COGIS (Childhood Obesity GIS) on Community
Commons. It's free to join Community Commons. You will need to register on the site to access the
Healthy Food Matters: ESHE Index Hub. We hope that you will explore the Hub, create and share your ESHE Index Map and Score, and tell your stories about how you are using it.
