Community Outreach and Marketing Internship

 

Time Frame: July –December 2015  

 

Program Description:

 

The Bureau of Maternal, Infant and Reproductive Health’s (BMIRH’s), Sexual and Reproductive Health Unit (SRHU) focuses on improving sexual and reproductive health outcomes for women and men of reproductive age (including teens).   The unit will continue the work on the Teens in NYC Program, which includes provider assessments, the print referral guide, mobile app, and workshop facilitation guide. In addition, SRHU has embarked on initiatives in the following areas:

 

 

·         Promotion of post-abortion and postpartum contraception

 

·         Integration of reproductive health into primary care

 

·         Exploration of partnership with CUNY to implement campus-based sexual and reproductive health services

 

·         Development of mass media campaign and provider education materials on all contraceptive methods 

 

 

SRHU evaluates its projects via an array of data sources including birth and induced termination of pregnancy certificate data, PRAMS, clinical practices surveys, app, social media and web analytics, an app user survey, and other sources.  The program’s formative evaluation projects have also included focus groups, discussions with stakeholders, and usability testing of web, online and print educational materials.

 

 

 

Internship Description:

 

Intern will dedicate at least 3 days (or 21 hours) per week to the following responsibilities:    

 

 

·         Assist with development, implementation and evaluation of community engagement related to a five-year sexual and reproductive health public awareness campaign that will launch in the Fall 2015; duties may include:

 

o    Research and outreach to community stakeholders to engage in campaign activities (eg community meetings, social media promotion, materials distribution)

 

o    Identify and attend community events; coordinate schedule of staff and interns to table at events to raise public awareness about campaign activities and distribute campaign materials

 

o    Assist in creating and scheduling Facebook posts for possible new Sexual and Reproductive Health Facebook page and/or existing Teens in NYC Facebook Page

 

o    Assist with the coordination of community stakeholder meetings including drafting documents (eg internal agendas, talking points, powerpoints), liaising with speakers, and conducting research to inform agenda items (eg regarding reproductive justice framework, status of policies on related issues, lessons learned by other local and national initiatives)

 

 

 

·         Other duties as assigned

 

 

Preferred Skills:

 

Familiarity and comfort with sexual and reproductive health issues, including contraception and abortion required.

 

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Experience with community outreach and public speaking, mobile apps and social media, and computer processing programs (e.g. Microsoft Office suite).
