Clinical acupuncture training in NYC.

Learn Three Styles of Acupuncture

Go far beyond the standardized TCM curriculum with training in two classics-based acupuncture styles, Acupuncture Physical Medicine (APM) and Japanese Acupuncture (JA), as well as the popular Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approach. As a Tri-State College graduate you will be capable of combining acupuncture styles, which empowers you to develop your own unique approach to patient care over the course of your career.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the most common form of East Asian medicine taught in the United States. TCM uses an analytical diagnostic methodology and is very well suited to the practice of internal medicine. TCM practitioners routinely combine acupuncture with herbs. Acupuncture Physical Medicine

Acupuncture Physical Medicine (APM) is a fusion of Classics-based French-meridian acupuncture with Western physical medicine techniques, most notably trigger point dry needling. APM uses extensive palpation to find areas where a patient has become constrained and imbalanced by physical and mental stress. The practitioner then intervenes with needles, pressure, and friction to release this "holding pattern." More on Acupuncture Physical Medicine >

Japanese Acupuncture

Japanese Acupuncture (JA) is rooted in the Classics and is noted for its shallow needling techniques and extensive use of smoldering mugwort herb (moxibustion). Training focuses on the highly regarded style of Sensei Kiiko Matsumoto (KM). A KM style practitioner palpates for active reflexes in the abdomen (hara) and elsewhere to establish a diagnosis and evaluate treatment efficacy. Students are also exposed to Japanese Meridian Therapy (Shudo Denmei Style) and may elect to study additional Japanese approaches.

Gain Clinical Confidence

Build strong clinical skills through our hands-on, experience-based programs. Tri-State College students begin their clinical training in the first weeks of the acupuncture program, and are always supervised by experienced acupuncturists. Our high faculty to student ratio ensures that you get ample personal attention and guidance as you learn to treat every type of condition licensed acupuncturists confront, from athletic injuries, acute and chronic pain, stress, immune, and fatigue disorders, to internal medical disorders of the body's organ systems.

Be Prepared for Integrative Medicine Jobs

Tri-State College’s acupuncture-first curriculum ensures that you will become a highly effective practitioner of acupuncture as a stand-alone practice, separate from Chinese herbology. The chemical-free nature of acupuncture is at the heart of its huge potential for integration into mainstream healthcare venues, thus practitioners who can effectively practice acupuncture as a stand-alone modality are far better suited to integrative medicine jobs.

Study With Master Practitioners

Students have the unique opportunity to observe and train with some of the most experienced master acupuncture practitioners in the country as they treat patients in apprenticeship-like Grand Rounds master classes. As a student you may attend an unlimited number of Grand Rounds classes tuition-free. Prospective students are also invited to come sit in on one of our unique Grand Rounds classes to experience the college firsthand.

Excel in Pain Management & Sports Medicine

The Acupuncture Physical Medicine approach to Trigger Point Dry-Needling is a powerful tool for treating pain conditions and sports or work related injuries. Pain conditions account for approximately 60% of a typical acupuncture practice, so you will find these techniques useful on a daily basis. Dry-needling can be used in conjunction with various acupuncture styles and can also be integrated with other forms of care, such as physical therapy, sports and rehabilitation medicine, massage, and chiropractic.

Learn Two Styles of Herbology

Our optional herbology program offers students training in both Traditional Chinese herbology and Japanese kampo herbology. Tri-State College is one of the only schools in the U.S. where Japanese herbology can be learned, thus offering our graduates a truly unique experience. Herbology students engage in an in-depth exploration of the clinical usage of approximately 200 of the most useful Chinese herbal formulas in a program that emphasizes hands-on, practical education rather than rote memorization.
