Soda and tobacco industry corporate social responsibility campaigns: How do they compare?

http://www.bmsg.org/sites/default/files/bmsg_phai_plos_soda_and_tobacco_industry_csr_campaigns.pdf

This study from BMSG analyzes how the tobacco industry has used "freedom of choice" language and appeals to personal responsibility both in the media and in the courtroom to prevent litigation and blame consumers for the health consequences of using tobacco. Conducted in collaboration with the Public Health Advocacy Institute, the study also looks at implications for other industries like soda and junk food, which have replicated and refined tobacco industry tactics.

Accelerating policy on nutrition: Lessons from tobacco, alcohol, firearms, and traffic safety

http://bmsg.org/sites/default/files/bmsg_report_accelerating_policy_on_nutrition_0.pdf

Public health advocates in tobacco, alcohol, firearms, and traffic safety struggled for years before understanding that individual approaches alone won't suffice and that environmental (or policy) approaches to prevention had to be part of the mix. This report from BMSG looks at how public health got to the point of pushing policy in other arenas so that public health funders, researchers, and practitioners might adapt and apply those lessons to preventing and reducing obesity.
