Way to go, FDA!!!

Dear Colleague,

Today, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the proposed revision of the Nutrition Fact panel should include a percent Daily Value for added sugars.  FDA comprehensively reviewed the science on which the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee made its conclusions about added sugars and their role in chronic disease. The proposal represents a major victory for public health as it seeks to:

  • Establish a Daily Reference Value of 10 percent of total energy intake from added sugars, translating to 50 grams or roughly 12 teaspoons of sugar
  • Require the percent Daily Value for added sugars on the Nutrition Facts Label

The FDA’s press release on Nutrition Facts Label Supplemental Proposed Rule is available at: http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/UCM455837.htm . The Federal Register Notice can be found at: https://federalregister.gov/a/2015-17928  .

The Center for Science in the Public Interest has released a statement endorsing these proproals, and we strongly urge public health organizations to express their support for FDA’s proposal by issuing statements and sharing on social media (please see sample Tweets below).
