Way to go, FDA!!!

Dear Colleague,

Today, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the proposed revision of the Nutrition Fact panel should include a percent Daily Value for added sugars. FDA comprehensively reviewed the science on which the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee made its conclusions about added sugars and their role in chronic disease. The proposal represents a major victory for public health as it seeks to:

  * Establish a Daily Reference Value of 10 percent of total energy intake from added sugars, translating to 50 grams or roughly 12 teaspoons of sugar
  * Require the percent Daily Value for added sugars on the Nutrition Facts Label
The FDA’s press release on Nutrition Facts Label Supplemental Proposed Rule is available at: http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/UCM455837.htm . The Federal Register Notice can be found at: https://federalregister.gov/a/2015-17928 .
The Center for Science in the Public Interest has released a statement<http://www.cspinet.org/new/201507241.html> endorsing these proproals, and we strongly urge public health organizations to express their support for FDA’s proposal by issuing statements and sharing on social media (please see sample Tweets below).

FDA will hold a call for consumers and public health today, July 24, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. EDT. The call-in number is 800-857-6726. International callers should dial 1-210-839-8754. The passcode for all callers is “483 86 78”
CSPI will draft a model comment to share with your organizations to post during the 75-day comment period. For questions regarding the comment, please contact Laura MacCleery, Director of Regulatory Affairs, at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
