Bronx Health REACH Nutrition & Fitness Workgroup Meeting – July 16th

Please join us for our next Nutrition & Fitness Workgroup meeting on Thursday, July 16th from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at Morrisania WIC D&TC (1225 Gerard Ave, Bronx NY 10452, room 214). We will be discussing results from the member survey we conducted earlier this year, the recent New York State Department of Health Creating Healthy Schools & Communities Grant that the Institute for Family Health/Bronx Health REACH received, as well as updates about the FoodCorps program and District 9 physical education survey.

Bronx Health REACH’s Charmaine Ruddock Provides Testimony for Bill Hearing Requiring NYC Dept. of Education to Report PE Info

On Wednesday, June 17 NYC Council’s Committee on Education and the Committee on Health held a joint hearing in the Council Chambers at City Hall for a local law requiring the NYC Department of Education to report information on physical education in NYC schools. The bill requires the Department of Education to submit to the Speaker of the Council and post on the Department’s website a report regarding information on physical education in NYC schools. Bronx Health REACH’s Charmaine Ruddock provided testimony and NY1 covered the event. Also, Kelly Moltzen, Healthy Schools NY Program Coordinator for Bronx Health REACH was interviewed in the Gotham Gazette.

 

 

Opening Ceremony for Soundview Farmers Market

On June 20 the Soundview Farmers Market officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony that featured NY State Assemblyman Marcos A. Crespo and NYC Council member Annabel Palma along with many from the Soundview community in attendance. To encourage residents to shop at the Soundview Farmers Market, Harvest Home has partnered with the Institute of Family Health through its Bronx Health REACH program to issue Fruit and Vegetable Rx to its patients at the Stevenson Health Center. Located at Morrison Avenue between Westchester Avenue and Harrod Place, the Market is open every Saturday through November 21, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. rain or shine. Bring your SNAP/EBT, WIC Farmer's Market and Senior Farmer Market coupons along with Health Bucks. News12 covered the event.

NYC Food Forum Bronx Listening Session July 11th

The NYC Food Forum will be having a Bronx Listening Session on Saturday, July 11th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Point CDC, 940 Garrison Ave, Bronx NY 10474. The listening sessions are structured to lift up the wisdom and voices of borough residents on racial and economic equity issues as they relate to the food system and place those most impacted by these inequities at the center of the conversation that identifies community food priorities and solutions. Summer Meals for NYC Children through September 4

Breakfast and lunch continues beyond the scheduled instructional school year from June 27th to September 4th. The Summer Meals Program is available at hundreds of public schools, community pool centers, New York City Housing Authority complexes, NYC Public Libraries, and other locations around the city. No registration, documentation, or ID is required to receive a free breakfast or lunch meal to all children 18 years old and under. Text "NYCMeals" to 877-877* to find a location near you.

 

 

Summer Youth Public Health Institute Friday Sessions in July & August

The Bronx District Public Health Office will host free training sessions for Bronx teens in July and August. Topics include: Science of Public Health, Healthy Living, and Adolescent Sexual & Reproductive Health. Free Work Readiness Workshops

Y Roads Bronx offers work readiness and job placement classes to those between 17 1/2 and 24 years of age that are not currently enrolled in school and are unemployed. Y Roads Bronx also offers Department of Education High School Equivalency classes for those interested in getting their High School Equivalency diploma. Free Tennis Lessons for Children

New York Junior Tennis League 2015 Youth Community Tennis Program in the Bronx offers free tennis lesson to youth between the ages of 5 and 18. Come and register at any time during the season. Bike New York’s Extended Programs for Schools & Summer Camps

Bike New York offers After School and Summer Camp programs at their Community Bike Education Centers throughout the City. Students will come to understand the mechanics of riding a bike, the rules of the road, best practices for riding in a group and on the streets, and–of course–the joy and freedom of biking.
