Health Services Research Team: Improving Lifestyle and Weight Management in Primary Care

Position Description: 

Melanie Jay, MD, MS (Assistant Professor of Medicine) and her team conduct research aimed to improve the treatment and prevention of obesity in primary care. The three current areas of study are:

-          To develop and evaluate a web-based weight management tool to facilitate goal-setting and obesity counseling interactions in primary care

-          To develop and pilot a randomized control trial (RCT) of a primary care-based intervention (incorporates web-based weight management tool and health coaches) to improve delivery of care for weight management in primary care

-          To identify barriers/facilitators to weight management care for Veterans

We are expanding our team (comprised of co-investigators, research assistants, research interns, consultants, data managers/analysts, software developers, etc.) to work on various aspects of these projects depending on skill-level, interests, and team needs. We also welcome doctoral students interested in collaboration, data analysis, and manuscript writing. Applicants should have an interest in medicine, public health, nutrition education, and/or physical activity training.

 

Expectations of Research Team Members (*specific to Health Coaches)

-          Bright, motivated, mature, professional, and independent

-          Strong interpersonal, writing, and computer skills

-          *Active listener, compassionate, empathetic, non-judgmental, motivational

-          Has an interest in pursuing a career in healthcare, health policy, health-related research, or health technology or related fields

-          Attend weekly research team meeting (currently Wednesday afternoons)

-          Dedicate 10-15 hours a week to projects

-          Able to work on-site at least 50-75% of the time (worksites include the Manhattan campus of the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System at 423 E 23rd St. and the NYU Translational Research Building at 227 30th St.)

-          Able to commit 6 months (minimum) to one year or more (preferred)

Areas of Experience/Interest

A competitive applicant will have a strong interest in research with experience in at least 1-2 of the following or other areas relevant to our research projects (in your cover letter, please reference and describe areas in which you have experience and also mention other areas of interest):

-          Preparation of Institutional Review Board (IRB) or grant materials/applications

-          Abstract/manuscript/presentation development

-          Lifestyle Counseling or Health Coaching (with patients preferred)

-          Participant recruitment (phone-calls, consenting)

-          Data collection (develop measurements, administer surveys)

-          Data management (Excel, REDCap)

-          Quantitative data analysis (Excel, SPSS/SAS)

-          Qualitative data analysis (coding, thematic analysis)

-          Computer programming (HTML5, PHP, ColdFusion)

-          Graphic design/Front-end web design

Benefit: This is an opportunity to gain experience working on a critical issue in healthcare and benefit from working with research team members of diverse, interdisciplinary backgrounds.  Research team members have many opportunities to be trained and mentored by more senior team members, lead analyses on different datasets, as well as attend conferences and lectures at NYU School of Medicine and the Manhattan VA.  Past research team members have gone on to medical school, doctoral programs, post-doctoral programs, or paid research coordinator positions.

 

Compensation: These are unpaid part-time research positions. Current funding cannot be promised at this time, but a modest stipend might become available. Research team members may have the opportunity to be authors on abstracts and manuscripts depending on involvement with preparation. Senior Research Assistants also have the opportunity to supervise junior research team members. Upon completion of the internship, research team members can fulfill practicum requirement or gain academic credit (must be discussed prior to start of internship), and/or receive letters of recommendation for graduate school and job placement.
