Hi everyone-

I wanted to follow-up on our Back to School note (see below) and check in with folks to encourage continued activity. Also added (directly below) are a few model posts to share a new infographic showing that the school foods program has long been bipartisan, which we developed to help diffuse some of the partisanship out of school foods policy.

Congress seems to have forgotten that the National School Lunch Program has long been bipartisan. In fact, the updated school meal nutrition standards--that Congress has been having a food fight over--began under President George W. Bush. Major reforms to school foods have enjoyed bipartisan support; from the creation of the National School Lunch Program under President Truman, to the creation of the School Breakfast Program under President Ford, to the last update of school meal nutrition standards under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which passed with bipartisan and broad stakeholder support. Registered voters of all parties support the healthier school meal standards-so why don't their Members of Congress? Let's remind Congress that improving kids' health and providing nutritious school meals are bipartisan issues. Check out this school food history at bit.ly/CNTimeline<http://bit.ly/CNTimeline> and urge Congress to maintain bipartisan progress on school meals: http://t.co/T2GXOz1qKp [upload picture]

Subject: NANA/USDA Back to School Campaign

Hi all-

As in years past, NANA is again partnering with USDA on a Back to School Campaign. Many NANA members and USDA have activities planned, and I am writing to ask if you can join the effort.

Celebrating the progress made on school meals could not come at a better time, as Congress is reauthorizing the Child Nutrition programs (which expire September 30). Back to School is a great time to get the word out to encourage parents, grandparents, health professionals, teachers, school administrators, policymakers, and students to support implementation of healthier school meals, snacks, and beverages.

Below are some ideas to help support schools as they continue to improve the nutrition and quality of school meals, snacks, and drinks:

* Use social media to get the word out - see sample tweets and Facebook posts below.

* Join us for a #FoodFri Back to School tweet chat hosted by MomsRising and CSPI on Friday, Aug 28 at 1-2 PM EDT. (A few other organizations also are planning tweet chats. We'll share invitations as they are available).

* Send an email alert to your members to get them engaged (feel free to use or adapt CSPI's alert, which you can find here<http://e-activist.com/ea-action/action?ea.client.id=1927&ea.campaign.id=40602&ea.tracking.id=1>).

* Blog about healthy school meals or include an article in your newsletter.

* Reach out to the press; write an Op-Ed or letter to the editor supporting healthy school foods.

Please let us know what you or your organization is doing or could do to spread the word and support healthy school foods (we are trying to track these efforts, so please send us materials you develop, notes you send to your members, published articles, Op-Eds or letters to the editor, etc.). Or contact us if you'd like more information or would like to brainstorm about how your organization can get involved. Let us know if you have other materials that you'd like us to share.

Also, please share this message with others to encourage them to join the NANA/USDA back to school campaign.

Thanks,

Margo and Colin
