Nutrition & Physical Activity Coordinator

The Nutrition and Physical Activity Coordinator is responsible for activities related to increasing access to physical activity opportunities and environments with healthy food and healthy beverage options in the Bronx. S/he will work closely with housing developers, parks and recreation agencies, transportation-focused organizations, schools and other partners. The Coordinator will also work closely with food retailers and their trade associations, distributors, farmer’s market operators, schools, the local health department and other organizations in the Bronx to implement policy, systems and environmental changes. Evaluator & Policy Analyst

The Evaluator and Policy Analyst is responsible for coordinating all aspects of evaluation and policy development for Towards a Healthier Bronx (THB) initiative funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Evaluator and Policy Analyst will work with the NYU Evaluation team to design, develop, and implement all evaluation activities for THB. This position will also be responsible for analyzing the policies in support of the THB program efforts. The Evaluator and Policy Analyst will report to the Project Director of Bronx Health REACH. Evaluation Intern

The Institute for Family Health’s Bronx Health REACH is seeking a bilingual Evaluation Intern who will assist with the implementation and evaluation of a project to increase fruit and vegetable consumption in the Bronx. Harvest Home Soundview Farmers Market Every Saturday through November 21st

Located at Morrison Avenue and Harrod Place, the Harvest Home Soundview Farmers Market is open every Saturday through November 21, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. rain or shine. SNAP/EBT, WIC Farmer's Market coupon, Senior Farmer Market coupons and Health Bucks are all accepted. The Harvest Home Soundview Farmers Market is easily accessible by taking the 6 train to the Morrison Ave-Soundview station and the Bx4, Bx4a, and Bx27 buses stop right at the market.

 

 

School Wellness Council Grant Application – Deadline October 9th

The School Wellness Council (SWC) competitive grant program awards funds to schools that create and strengthen a wellness council. Along with start-up funding, SWC offers schools structure, support, goals, and recognition as the organizational components required to develop or strengthen a School Wellness Council. New York City public schools are encouraged to apply. New schools may apply for the $2,500 SWC Implementation Grant, and Continuation Grant schools may apply for $1,000 awards. Every Body Walk! Collaborative Micro Grants - Deadline October 15th

America Walks and the Every Body Walk! Collaborative are pleased to announce a new micro grant program designed to assist local walking advocates build on the momentum of the newly released Surgeon General’s Call to Action. This one time award funds 10-15 community groups up to $2500 for activities designed to increase local walking programming and stimulate community demand for infrastructure improvements that provide accessible, safe walkable places for the entire community. Nutrition Education Professional Development Workshop - October 23rd & 24th

Learn about developing nutrition lessons that correspond to existing curriculum and state standards, developing classroom policies that support students’ healthy eating and active living, and how to communicate about healthy eating with students, families, and colleagues. The workshop will be held on Friday October 23rd from 3 to 5 p.m. at South Bronx Prep, and Saturday October 24th from 9 a. m. to 5 p.m. at MS/HS 223. WellCare Health Plans of New York Announces Micro-grant Program

Funding cuts to social programs continues to impact the social safety net leading to the need for creative, local solutions and non-traditional partnerships. WellCare partners with local community organizations who are helping their communities arrive at better health outcomes. This year, WellCare will focus their micro-grants on organizations addressing Obesity, Homelessness, and Mental Health issues. Grants will be awarded in amounts of $500, $1,000, and $1,500. Free Bike Safety Presentations for NYC Schools

Did you know that Bike New York offers free bike safety presentations to schools and organizations throughout the five boroughs? Bike New York will send a trained instructor with a fun, engaging interactive presentation suitable for students Pre-K through 12th grade (ages 4-17). Content is designed to teach kids that cycling is a fun and healthy activity, but also has rules all children should know and follow. Free Tennis Lessons for Children

New York Junior Tennis League 2015 Youth Community Tennis Program in the Bronx offers free tennis lesson to youth between the ages of 5 and 18. Come and register at any time during the season.
