Experts say access is just part of food desert solution
Walmart reported it surpassed its goal of opening a minimum of 275 stores in US food deserts by 2016, but study data and experts say access alone may not translate into people buying more healthy foods. Researcher Dalia Stern at the Carolina Population Center said the type of store may not be driving consumer purchases and that to change buying habits, stores should promote healthier foods at better prices when compared with less healthy food.
