Subject: Sustainable Agriculture, Food Systems and Wellness in Cuba

Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to let you know about an upcoming professional development opportunity to learn about Sustainable Agriculture, Food Systems and Wellness in Cuba from March 13-22, 2016.   Cuba’s agriculture is largely organic by necessity, and the contrasts with the US food and agriculture system are many. The recent changes in US-Cuban relations are creating new developments in tourism and the economy.  What will the impact be on the food environment or health in the Cuban population?

Participants in this program will travel to Havana, Cuba, to learn about sustainable agriculture, community development, preventive health care and food systems while experiencing the vibrant culture of Cuba through music and arts.  Through site visits to farms, bioreserves and organizations in Havana and neighboring provinces, along with discussions with guest speakers and community representatives, participants will gain an understanding of the agricultural and social transitions Cuba has experienced, and learn new models addressing issues of sustainability, community development, health care and wellness.

Through this visit, we anticipate that participants will:

1.            Gain insights into the cultural, economic, health, and food systems in a state-run market economy.

2.            Understand the agricultural and social transitions in Cuba, with an emphasis on sustainability, food security, and community development.

3.            Reflect upon new models to support food, health and the environment.

Please consider participating or sending  this message to others who may be interested.  More information is available on this website: http://nancycohenphdrd.wix.com/cuba.  I would be glad to answer any questions at any time.

Sincerely,
