Description:
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA), issued every five years by the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services, reflect the distillation of the latest body of nutrition science into nutritional goals that promote health and reduce the risk of chronic disease. The guidelines are the foundation for federal nutrition policy and nutrition education across the U.S. It’s important that RDNs have a thorough understanding of the science behind the DGAs and are able to translate the recommendations in their practice with consumers.
As the final 2015 DGA policy document is scheduled to be published by the end of 2015, join this 90-minute webinar (sponsored by the Nutrition Education for the Public Dietetic Practice Group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) for an update on the latest body of science compiled by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans Committee (DGAC). This will include areas needing further research and strategies that can help in communicating the report and anticipated recommendations.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:

· Describe the framework used by the DGAC to review the science

· Identify sources of scientific evidence behind the DGAC report

· Define two or more dietary behaviors or eating patterns needing further research or clarity for potential inclusion

· Verbalize what is known from two or more surveys in the U.S. about consumers understanding and response to the 2010 DGAs

· Enumerate three to five strategies for communicating not only the scientific foundation of the DGAC report but also the anticipated 2015 DGAs
