 Title of the Presentation
"The Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program: A Community Health Approach to Increasing Healthy Food Access"

Objectives of the Presentation

  *   Give an overview of Wholesome Wave's programming, including an introduction to the Fruit and Vegetable Prescription (FVRx) Program;
  *   Establish the value of collaboration between hospitals, clinics, healthy food retailers, and other key community stakeholders through FVRx as a solution to increasing access to affordable fruits and vegetables and chronic diet-related disease prevention;
  *   Share insights and key findings from national FVRx programming and how Wholesome Wave supports community-based partners; and
  *   Present Wholesome Wave Georgia's FVRx program, including patients' experiences, preliminary outcomes, lessons learned, and future endeavors.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Amanda Morgan is the FVRx Senior Program Manager at Wholesome Wave, based out of Bridgeport, CT. Amanda oversees the implementation of FVRx programs nationally and works with community partners as they design and build their own FVRx programs. Amanda also leads FVRx resource and tool development as Wholesome Wave builds its capacity to help community partners scale and sustain their FVRx programs. Prior to joining Wholesome Wave, Amanda worked for non-profits in the U.S and internationally to addressing the needs of refugees and internally displaced people through the Burma Border Project, the International Rescue Committee, and Save the Children. Amanda holds a Masters degree from the University of Kent in Canterbury and a Bachelors degree from the University of Massachusetts.  She lives in Fairfield, CT with her husband and two children.

Sara Berney is the first full-time Executive Director Wholesome Wave Georgia. She is passionate about increasing access to and affordability of nutritious foods and building and strengthening local food communities. Prior to joining Wholesome Wave Georgia, Sara worked as a Public Health Consultant for Deloitte Consulting LLP, supporting clients at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and public health non-profits including the Flour Fortification Initiative. Sara also served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Peru where she trained community health promoters and youth health educators in nutrition education and implemented school garden programs in five primary schools. Sara graduated from Emory University Magna Cum Laude with a BA in African Studies and Sociology. While at Emory, Sara was awarded multiple grants to work as a Health Educator and conduct public health research in Uganda. Sara has been a regular volunteer in the Atlanta food community since moving to Atlanta in 2006.

Who are the calls for?  This call series is intended for state or local health public health practitioners that are taking an active role in healthier food retail strategies.

What is the purpose?  The purpose of this call series is to facilitate a networking forum to share information among public health practitioners on healthier food retail strategies, primarily focusing on corner stores and farmers markets.

When are the calls? Bimonthly (even months), 1:30 - 2:30 PM EST/ET every third Tuesday of the month.
