The Bronx Receives RWJF Culture of Health Prize

The Bronx is one of eight winners of the 2015 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Prize, honored for working to ensure that everyone in their community has the opportunity to live a longer, healthier and more productive life. The Bronx will receive a $25,000 cash prize and the opportunity to inspire other communities and share their successes and lessons learned during their transformational journey. The Bronx Borough President’s Office, Institute for Family Health’s Bronx Health REACH, CUNY’s Institute for Health Equity at Lehman College, Montefiore Health System, and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Bronx District Public Health Office founded an initiative, #Not62-The Campaign for A Healthy Bronx to address, through a multi-sectoral approach, the social and economic conditions that impact the overall quality of life; and help create an environment where Bronx residents can attain their highest level of health. New York City Council Passes Physical Education Legislation for NYC Schools

The New York City Council last week passed legislation requiring the Department of Education (DOE) to report the number of minutes, frequency of physical education, number of certified instructors, and space used for PE instruction at all NYC public schools. The first report will be posted on the DOE website in 2016, allowing parents to monitor how much PE is given at their children’s school.

Nutrition & Physical Activity Coordinator

The Nutrition and Physical Activity Coordinator is responsible for activities related to increasing access to physical activity opportunities and environments with healthy food and healthy beverage options in the Bronx. S/he will work closely with housing developers, parks and recreation agencies, transportation-focused organizations, schools and other partners. The Coordinator will also work closely with food retailers and their trade associations, distributors, farmer’s market operators, schools, the local health department and other organizations in the Bronx to implement policy, systems and environmental changes. Evaluator & Policy Analyst

The Evaluator and Policy Analyst is responsible for coordinating all aspects of evaluation and policy development for Towards a Healthier Bronx (THB) initiative funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Evaluator and Policy Analyst will work with the NYU Evaluation team to design, develop, and implement all evaluation activities for THB. This position will also be responsible for analyzing the policies in support of the THB program efforts. The Evaluator and Policy Analyst will report to the Project Director of Bronx Health REACH. Located at Morrison Avenue and Harrod Place, the Harvest Home Soundview Farmers Market is open every Saturday through November 21, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. rain or shine. Love Your Block Grant Program - Deadline Nov 6th

Love Your Block is an initiative of NYC Service in partnership with Citizens Committee for NYC that provides a unique opportunity for neighborhood groups to transform and improve their communities through local action while leveraging City services. Resident-led volunteer groups can receive a grant of up to $1,000 and City services provided by the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Department of Transportation, and the Department of Sanitation to improve their block. In addition to the grant and City services, groups receive project planning and community building assistance as well as support with local media coverage for the project. Youth Empowerment Summit - Nov 7th

Take Care New York Community Outreach Mini-Grants

The Fund for Public Health in New York (FPHNY) on behalf of the NYC Dept of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) is seeking neighborhood partners to help generate broad community participation in Take Care New York Community Consultation events. DOHMH will hold Community Consultations in multiple neighborhoods within each borough in order to share the revised health agenda as well as learn from community members about local health priorities. Organizations that have a strong community base in the neighborhoods where the Community Consultations will be taking place may be eligible to receive funds in the amount of $1,000 - $10,000 to conduct outreach and raise resident awareness and participation in the events.
