Bronx Health REACH Holds Clergy/Legislators Meeting for #Not62 – Campaign For A Healthy Bronx!

On Thursday, November 19, Bronx Health REACH held the #Not62-The Campaign for a Healthy Bronx! Clergy/Legislators Meeting with clergy and lay leaders from 24 Bronx based churches and from the offices of 6 Bronx elected officials and their representatives to discuss and determine action steps to improve the health and well-being of all Bronx residents. The Clergy leaders and elected officials were also joined by 35 individuals from 20 Bronx organizations and community groups.

 

Speakers included:

 

- Professor Nicholas Freudenberg from CUNY School of Public Health and Hunter College

- Dr. Jane Bedell, from Bronx District Public Health Office, NYCDOHMH

- Fernando Tirado, Bronx District Public Health Office

- Maxine Golub, Institute for Family Health

- Melissa Cebollero, Montefiore Health System

- Paula N. Richter, Bronx Borough President’s Office

 

At the conclusion of the event those attending pledged to join the #Not 62 Campaign and committed themselves to take action to improve the health and well-being of the Bronx. Public Health Communications Intern

Bronx Health REACH is seeking a Public Health Communications Intern for the Partnership in Community Health Program. The project will be for the development of a Public Health media campaign to promote water/healthy beverages in New York City. In collaboration with the Partnership for a Healthier NYC, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and media groups, the Capstone project will include assessing past campaigns, organizing and leading focus groups, developing campaign materials, creating a Bronx-focused dissemination strategy, and presenting information about the campaign to community members and organizations across the Bronx. Nutrition & Physical Activity Coordinator

The Nutrition and Physical Activity Coordinator is responsible for activities related to increasing access to physical activity opportunities and environments with healthy food and healthy beverage options in the Bronx. S/he will work closely with housing developers, parks and recreation agencies, transportation-focused organizations, schools and other partners. The Coordinator will also work closely with food retailers and their trade associations, distributors, farmer’s market operators, schools, the local health department and other organizations in the Bronx to implement policy, systems and environmental changes. Evaluator & Policy Analyst

The Evaluator and Policy Analyst is responsible for coordinating all aspects of evaluation and policy development for Towards a Healthier Bronx (THB) initiative funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Evaluator and Policy Analyst will work with the NYU Evaluation team to design, develop, and implement all evaluation activities for THB. This position will also be responsible for analyzing the policies in support of the THB program efforts. The Evaluator and Policy Analyst will report to the Project Director of Bronx Health REACH. Graceplay Connect Giveaway - Through January 2016

Home Energy Assistance Program - Through January 2016

Households that need help paying their heating bills this winter can apply for assistance from the Home Energy Assistance Program. The program provides financial assistance to help low-income and elderly New Yorkers keep their homes warm in the winter months. Eligible households can receive a one-time benefit of up to $625 this winter depending upon income, household size and heating source. Kresge Foundation Grant - Deadline January 15, 2016

The Kresge Foundation Grant is designed to support food-oriented initiatives that contribute to economic revitalization, cultural expression and health in low-income communities. Kresge will award up to 20 planning grants of up to $75,000 each in the first quarter of 2016 as part of the initiative “Fresh, Local & Equitable: Food as a Creative Platform for Neighborhood Revitalization.” Organizations and collaborations that lead food-oriented development initiatives in economically distressed urban neighborhoods are eligible. Voices for Healthy Kids Grants - Through 2016

The American Heart Association & Robert Wood Johnson Foundation have launched Voices for Healthy Kids, which aims to engage, organize and mobilize people to improve the health of their communities and reverse the childhood obesity epidemic. Voices for Healthy Kids will advance coordinated state, local and tribal public policy issue advocacy campaigns focused on childhood obesity priorities, and utilizes the American Heart Association’s proven advocacy capacity to drive meaningful and widespread policy change that will support the reversal of the childhood obesity epidemic. NYRR Seeking Community Liason & Community Outreach Intern

New York Road Runners is seeking to fill two positions: Community Liaison and Community Outreach Intern. The positions are ideal for a graduate student or recent graduate, or someone looking to work 25 hours a week during the late afternoon, week nights and weekends.
