Cardiologist Steven Nissen criticized the new US Dietary Guidelines this week in the Annals of Internal Medicine, saying recommendations on cholesterol and saturated fats may be examples of bad science undermining good nutrition advice and calling for better research. Nutrition experts countered that food industry influence, not poor science, was to blame and that good dietary recommendations were diluted and revised to the point of being contradictory.

EWG

A few weeks ago, the federal government released its Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Its recommendations for “healthful eating” fall seriously short: they fail to steer Americans toward a healthier diet that’s also better for the environment. What’s more, the 2016 edition of the guidelines, like those before it, have Big Food’s fingerprints all over it.  We at EWG believe that Americans need clear, unambiguous nutritional guidelines, not a document that tip-toes around the hard truth. That’s why we just released EWG’s first-ever Dietary Guidelines – to give YOU solid nutritional guidance that looks out for your health, the health of your family and the planet.

EWG's Dietary Guidelines: For Your Health and the Environment

The government’s new guidelines:

  • Water down evidence on the benefits of a plant-based diet, failing to advise Americans to eat less meat;
  • Ignore the serious health risks of mercury exposure from consuming certain fish;
  • Do not urge Americans to cut down on soft drink consumption, even though soft drinks are the main source of added sugars in the American diet.

EWG’s Dietary Guidelines dig deeper. They are designed to serve the public interest, not the vested interests of the $1 trillion-a-year food industry.
