Research and Policy Analyst

Position Available

The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) seeks a highly skilled and motivated individual to join the organization as a research and policy analyst. This full-time position reports to the Director of Nutrition Policy and works closely with the President as well as staff working on the SNAP (food stamp) and child nutrition programs. FRAC is noted for its reporting, research and analysis of the extent of hunger in America, the reach of the federal nutrition programs, and their impact on the health and well-being of low-income families and individuals. This position has primary responsibility for tracking and analyzing third-party data and data collected by FRAC, compiling reports and disseminating information on hunger, food insecurity, family economic security and the federal nutrition programs; and assisting FRAC staff and FRAC’s state and local network with data analysis and building data banks.



Organizational Background

FRAC is the leading national nonprofit organization working to improve and implement effective public policies and public-private partnerships to eradicate hunger and improve nutrition for low-income people in the United States. FRAC engages in research, policy analysis and advocacy, training and technical assistance, coalition-building and an array of communications strategies. FRAC works in partnership with hundreds of national, state and local nonprofit organizations, public agencies, corporations and labor organizations to address hunger and food insecurity, and poverty as their root cause.



Responsibilities The person filling this position is the primary resource to the organization for data and research relating to hunger, food insecurity, family economic security and utilization of the federal nutrition programs (e.g., SNAP, school meals, summer and afterschool food, child care food, and WIC).



The position involves:

 Identifying, collecting and analyzing data from national, state and local public agency databases, other non-profit institutions and FRAC’s own research;

 Developing written analyses and graphic (including mapping) presentations of findings;

 Supporting program staff in analyzing pending legislative and policy options and program developments;

 Following relevant research sources and producing summaries and alerts about key new studies for periodic dissemination to advocates and policymakers;

 Expanding FRAC’s ability to use new public and private data sources;

 Communicating effectively to a variety of audiences, including FRAC’s network of state and local advocates, the results of research, policy and data analysis through policy briefs, publications, web postings and other means;

 Assisting FRAC’s state and local organizational network in understanding relevant data sources and their application to the network’s work; and,

 Representing FRAC at conferences and meetings with outside organizations.



Skills and Experience

 Master’s degree in a relevant area (such as public policy, statistics, public health, economics) with 2 or more years of related work experience;

 Able to interpret complex data sets and present them in understandable terms;

 Demonstrated commitment to accuracy, strong writing skills, and the ability to work on multiple tasks, often on a time-sensitive basis;

 Extremely comfortable with computer software such as spreadsheets and database programs, as well as advanced statistics and data analysis software, such as STATA, SPSS and SAS; knowledge of mapping software, a plus;

 Familiarity with manipulating large data sets and proficient in basic statistical analysis;

 Able to work independently and interest in identifying new areas for research and analysis;

 Experience working in a team environment;

 Experience in hunger and anti-poverty research, a plus; and,

 Commitment to social justice work.
