 Welcome!

2016 promises to be an exciting year, if the first few weeks are any indication. We are happy to announce the publication of our newest resource - the In Defense of Food curriculum to accompany a PBS documentary based on Michael Pollan's book. There's been lots of action on the policy front too, from a bipartisan Senate effort on Child Nutrition Reauthorization to the newest Dietary Guidelines for Americans. You can read more about all of these developments below.
What else is exciting this year? Beans! The United Nations has declared 2016 the International Year of Pulses<http://columbia.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ebbdc27a6417de82e9320e64d&id=94c2a3756f&e=813b514291>. One delicious way to take a small step toward a more sustainable diet is pledging <http://columbia.us8.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=ebbdc27a6417de82e9320e64d&id=88547e65e8&e=813b514291> to <http://columbia.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ebbdc27a6417de82e9320e64d&id=b5d0bfa513&e=813b514291> eating<http://columbia.us8.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=ebbdc27a6417de82e9320e64d&id=fbec73a87e&e=813b514291> pulses once a week for 10 weeks<http://columbia.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ebbdc27a6417de82e9320e64d&id=fa880762fa&e=813b514291>. Research Spotlight

A new report by the Tisch Food Center's Renata Peralta highlights principal support for New York City's universal free lunch program for middle schoolers. This report comes at a time when advocates are pressing the Mayor and City Council to expand this program to elementary and high schools. Policy Corner
CNR update
The Senate Agriculture Committee recently passed a bipartisan Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill. The bill lays the groundwork for strengthening nutrition education and incorporates some Tisch Food Center recommendations, including: mandating a study on the state of nutrition education in federal programs, extending WIC eligibility to children up to age six, and doubling funding for the Farm to School program. Now it's time for to call on the Senate to bring the bill to a floor vote. Send a message<http://columbia.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ebbdc27a6417de82e9320e64d&id=33f0896e48&e=813b514291> to your Senators to take action, via NYC4CNR.

ICYMI: Dietary Guidelines published
The new Dietary Guidelines for Americans were released in January. Many of the new recommendations, including more focus on healthy fats and whole foods, as well as a strong stance on the reduction of refined sugars, are promising. While the final guidelines do not mention sustainability, we are encouraged by how passionate the public response was to the DGA committee's report linking personal and planetary health. Check out the New York Times' recap of the guidelines here<http://columbia.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ebbdc27a6417de82e9320e64d&id=f1f403fc6c&e=813b514291>.

In Defense of Food curriculum
TFC has just released the In Defense Of Food curriculum<http://columbia.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ebbdc27a6417de82e9320e64d&id=9c43ea0f48&e=813b514291>, a companion to the PBS documentary <http://columbia.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ebbdc27a6417de82e9320e64d&id=13b798b138&e=813b514291> based on Michael Pollan's book, which uses activities and film clips to give young people new tools to think critically about food.

Students prepare delicious recipes, create performance poetry and participate in peer-to-peer learning to investigate the question, “What should I eat to be healthy?” and discover what Pollan means by his now-famous answer: Eat Food. Not Too Much. Mostly Plants.

"...this curriculum is not only informative and effective, but also a great deal of fun, with lots of imaginative, enjoyable exercises and recipes for real food dishes for kids to make themselves. I am delighted to see my work give rise to this exciting new project. I think it can really make a difference in young people’s lives."
