Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture is a nonprofit farm and education center located just 25 miles north of Manhattan in Pocantico Hills, NY.  Stone Barns Center operates a four-season farm and is working on broader initiatives to create a healthy and sustainable food system.  Through our farm innovation and experimentation, Growing Farmers Initiative, children’s education programs, and diverse public awareness programs, we work to change the way America eats and farms.

Farm Camp Staff: Counselor

Stone Barns Center has openings for Farm Camp Counselors. Counselors are expected to assist Instructors in supervising and engaging campers in daily activities, which include chores in the pasture and field, hiking, crafts, cooking, bonding and team-building activities.  The successful candidate will have previous experience working with children and enjoy spending time outdoors.  Applicants must be able to work Monday through Friday, 8:30AM – 4:30PM from June 20, 2016 through August 19, 2016.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  *   Assist Farm Camp Instructor with supervising and teaching 10––14 campers
  *   Identify and meet all camper needs to the best of your ability
  *   Serve as a role model for campers and CITs
  *   Supervise mealtime and recreation time
  *   Assist with afternoon clean-up of camp areas
  *   Participate actively in all activities (e.g., egg collecting, tomato harvesting)
  *   Know the location of all assigned campers during camp hours
  *   Attend mandatory training sessions, staff meetings and enrichments
  *   Assist with other camp activities as needed

Required Skills and Experience


  *   Previous experience working with children
  *   Ability to work both as a member of a team and independently
  *   Ability to accept direction of Instructors and other staff
  *   Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  *   Ability to adapt to a changing situation, solve problems, and think creatively
  *   Demonstrated interest in the environment, sustainable farming and education
  *   Current certifications in standard first aid and CPR are preferred
  *   Preferred applicants will have completed high school.  Must be 16 or older.

Compensation:

This is a seasonal, part-time position with an hourly wage of $9/hour.

Stone Barns Center has multiple openings for Farm Camp Instructors. Instructors are responsible for providing instruction to small groups of campers, helping to develop food and agriculture curriculum, and mentoring counselors and CITs. Daily activities include chores in the pasture and field, hiking, crafts, cooking, bonding and team-building activities.  The successful candidate must have previous experience working with children, and be familiar with the basic principles of sustainable agriculture.  Applicants must be able to work Monday through Friday, 8:30AM – 4:30PM from June 20, 2016 through August 19, 2016.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  *   Supervise, teach and inspire 10-14 campers
  *   Identify and meet all camper needs
  *   Serve as a role model for campers and mentor junior staff
  *   Prepare and teach lessons in sustainable agriculture, organic gardening, animal care, natural crafts and cooking
  *   Supervise mealtime and recreation time
  *   Help with afternoon clean-up of camp areas
  *   Engage actively in all camp activities (e.g., egg collecting, garlic harvest)
  *   Know the location of all assigned campers during camp hours
  *   Attend mandatory training sessions, staff meetings and enrichments

Required Skills and Experience

  *   Previous experience working with children, preferably in a day camp setting
  *   Desire to work with children in farm-related activities
  *   Ability to plan programs and conduct children’s activities
  *   Ability to work both as a member of a team and independently
  *   Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  *   Demonstrated interest in the environment, sustainable farming and education
  *   Willingness to learn new skills and work towards the shared goals of the Farm Camp team
  *   Ability to adapt to a changing situation, solve problems, and think creatively
  *   Preference will be given to applicants with significant experience teaching in an outdoor setting
  *   Must be enrolled in college or have a Bachelor’s degree or higher
  *   Certification in standard first aid and community CPR is required by June 1, 2016

Compensation:

This is a seasonal, part-time position with an hourly wage of $12/hour.
