Healthy Eating Research and Bridging the Gap released a joint issue brief, School Fundraisers: Positive Changes in Foods Sold, but Room for Improvement Remains, that provides new data on school fundraisers.  While many states are applying the Smart Snacks standards to all on-campus fundraisers, a number of states allow a significant number of exemptions, allowing too many junk food fundraisers.  The brief shows that progress has been made since Smart Snacks went into effect (particularly among elementary schools overall and prohibiting soda sales at the district and state level), however more work needs to be done on unhealthy fundraisers.  If your state is among those allowing unhealthy fundraisers (see the issue brief), we hope you will consider working at the local or state level to adopt stronger policies on fundraising and food marketing to kids.
