Two part-time, seasonal Garden Educators (NYC)
 
Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) is a multi-program community organization that
provides a unique and comprehensive network of education, social-service,
recreation and health programs to more than 22,000 children and adults in
Central Harlem. The majority of the children HCZ works with go to public
schools and attend its engaging after-school programs. Nationally and
internationally recognized, HCZ has been lauded by The New York Times as “one
of the most ambitious social-policy experiments of our time.”
 
Healthy Harlem is a program within HCZ that is designed to instill a culture
of healthy living throughout the Zone. Our programming includes nutrition,
fitness, gardening, and teen sexual health.
 
We are seeking two part-time, seasonal Garden Educators to work with our team
at selected HCZ sites with elementary-aged students. This position offers an
opportunity for meaningful gardening and teaching experience for the right
candidate. You will be the primary point person for two HCZ garden locations.
We are seeking passionate and enthusiastic lovers of growing food who want to
share their knowledge with others. The Garden Educators will plan and teach
lessons as well as maintain the gardens at their sites. Your input on what
you’d like to grow at your site and what types of garden lessons you’d like to
teach will be welcome.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plant and maintain garden beds: weed and care for plants without the use of
chemicals;
- Prepare for garden activities by ensuring that you have everything you will
need for class;
- Plan and teach elementary students' hands-on activities in the garden based
on pre-planned curriculum;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements
- Working on bachelor’s degree in related field and/or at least 1 year of
experience facilitating or teaching experience with youth (outdoor group
management experience preferred)
- Knowledge and skills in small-scale organic food production or home
gardening
- Knowledge of relevant topics such as urban gardening, horticulture, health
and nutrition, food systems and food access desired
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations including youth and
adults
- Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking
skills
- Ability to work independently and be flexible!
 
Time commitment: Ideally 3 days a week: Mon/Wed/Fri May 30 – August 5, 5 hours
per day. Compensation is based on experience.
 
June will be a time for the Garden Educators to become acquainted with their
sites and to prepare for teaching gardening classes at their sites by planting
and gathering materials for classes to be held in July. Garden program runs
from July 5th – July 29th and will require the Garden Educator to teach 2
classes (45 minutes - 1 hour each) on Mondays and Wednesdays, with Fridays
used as planning days. Other time will be used for acquiring materials,
becoming familiar with lessons, maintaining gardens and assisting with other
garden-related projects as time allows.

ESNY Nutritionist – Middletown, NY

Eat Smart New York (ESNY) is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention (SNAP) program in New York.  The ESNY Nutritionist will primarily be responsible for delivery of established SNAP public education programming to improve healthy food and lifestyle choices among families and individuals encompassing all age groups throughout the Hudson Valley SNAP Region.  This position will also assist with marketing efforts for SNAP programming in collaboration with other nutritionists in the SNAP region.  The position requires fluency in Spanish: read, write and teach in Spanish.

This is a grant-funded, full time, 40 hours per week, $21.02 per hour, non-exempt, benefits eligible position.

This position will be an employee of Cornell Cooperative Extension Orange County but works in Dutchess County.

The Registered Dietician (RD) is responsible for the implementation of all nutritional counseling in assigned Developmental Disabilities Programs in close collaboration with the team members. In addition, the RD will act as the secondary nutrition expert under the guidance and direction of the Nutrition Director. 

Job Responsibilities:

 

·  Implement food handling and storage policies that will assure food safety in all NYF residential facilities.
·  Implement menu plans reflecting most current USDA guidelines for healthy eating for all NYF residential facilities.
·  Develop standardized food shopping lists for residential staff based on menu plans. 
·  Provide nutrition training and education for residential staff addressing issues of food safety, balanced meal planning and healthy snack alternatives as well as any special diets that residents may require.
·  Make routine site visits to residential facilities and review kitchens to ensure all dietary guidelines are followed.
·  Provide one-on-one nutritional counseling for residents or counseling to staff and management depending on the individual’s level of functioning. Consults for referral go based on nurse screening criteria. The dietitian will assess their nutrition risk along with plan diet and recommendations. Medical issues in this community are mostly Overweight/Obesity, Diabetes, Nutrition Support and Dysphagia.
·  Conduct cooking demonstrations and cooking exercises with staff when possible. 

·  Position will require travel to locations throughout the city and Rockland/Westchester Counties.

Requirements

·  Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.

·  NYS Certification Dietitian-Nutritionist

·  Excellent written and verbal communication skills

·  2 years clinical experience working with the OPWDD population.

·  Computer literacy
