New York State Budget Supports DASH-NY Policy Asks

Several workgroups had successes in the 2016 New York State budget, released on April 1st. Economic and Community Development Workgroup members were able to greatly increase non-MTA transit funding across the state. In addition, Assemblywoman Addie Russell aligned with Food Policy Workgroup members to allocate $300,000 for a pilot healthy food procurement incentive program for school lunch. Steering Committee Meeting on April 26th

UPDATES FROM CHRONIC DISEASE PREVENTION

New Report: The Best Complete Streets Policies of 2015

In 2015, communities passed a total of 82 Complete Streets policies. Each year, the National Complete Streets Coalition analyzes newly passed Complete Streets policies and ranks them<http://support.nyam.org/site/R?i=XlaFQojb8j_SmEjnL8D4-g> to celebrate the people who developed exceptional policy language and to provide leaders at all levels of government with examples of strong Complete Streets policies.

New Report: 2016 Shape of the Nation

Voices for Healthy Kids and SHAPE America released the 2016 update<http://support.nyam.org/site/R?i=EemTUhvOur65keohpqkyBg> to the Shape of the Nation report on the state of physical education and physical activity in the American education system. While these programs are essential in the formative growth of children and adolescents, there is a large disparity in state requirements and implementation.

Issue Brief: Use of Brand Mascots & Media Characters in Food Marketing

Healthy Eating Research released an issue brief<http://support.nyam.org/site/R?i=lRBpGiVxZmLqLihSfvxo_Q>, examining how food, beverage, restaurant, and entertainment companies have used brand mascots and cartoon media characters to influence children’s diet and health. This report highlights the need to improve the responsible use of mascots and media characters to promote only healthy products to children ages 14 and younger.

Safe Routes to School National Partnership & YMCA Releases: Making Strides State Report Cards for 2016

The Safe Routes to School National Partnership and the YMCA have partnered to release the Making Strides<http://support.nyam.org/site/R?i=v36xVWutP9blPb8fA_z7uA> report cards assessing each state on 24 indicators specific to supporting walking, biking, and building active communities.
