USDA Announces Effort to Strengthen Nutrition Among Young Children, Create Healthy Habits Early

ORLANDO, Fla. April 22, 2016 – Agriculture Undersecretary Kevin Concannon announced strengthened nutrition standards for food and beverages served to young children and others in day care settings at the annual conference of the National Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) Sponsors Association. Young children and adults in day care will now receive meals with more whole grains, a greater variety of vegetables and fruits, and less added sugars and solid fats. The science-based standards introduced in this final rule will elevate the nutritional quality of meals and snacks provided under the CACFP to better align with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and to be consistent with the meals children receive as part of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP). Read full rule here.<http://HungerFreeAmerica.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=f98dc9b62ab881fa8bab218e6&id=c44b12168c&e=de83c355ec>

The USDA is proposing policies to improve food access and healthy choices for low-income Americans by requiring stores that accept SNAP to carry healthier food options. Best Practices From Across the Country

Each month, Hunger Free America will highlight a best practice in anti-hunger by AmeriCorps VISTAs from across the country. This month we will highlight Lauryn Woodruff and D.C. Hunger Solutions.

Lauryn Woodruff, AHOC member with D.C. Hunger Solutions, includes destigmatizing facts about SNAP in all of her volunteer trainings. In doing so, she ensures that volunteers who are engaging older adults in conversations about SNAP have a better idea of senior participation rates, average benefit allotment, and special deductions only given to older adults during the application process. Additionally, each volunteer distributes a D.C.-centric Senior SNAP Brochure to people at community events.
