USDA Awards Large Grants to Encourage Healthy Purchases from SNAP Recipients

WASHINGTON, June 8, 2016 – U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that the USDA awarded $16.8 million in grants to benefit participants of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The grants will make it possible for recipients to purchase more fruits and vegetables with their SNAP benefits. Additionally, the funds will support the creation of community relationships between regional food providers and local economies. For more details about the grants, click here.

USDA Releases Guides to Help Convenience Stores Stock and Sell Healthier Options

PHILADELPHIA, June 2, 2016 – The USDA Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services, Kevin Concannon, announced the newly published Healthy Corner Store Guide containing advice and information about how to implement healthier options at convenience stores in local communities. The guides provide resources to low-income areas where supermarkets are scarce, and most residents rely on corner stores for grocery shopping. The guide contains information on marketing, sourcing, and displaying the healthier items in the stores.

Best Practices From Across the Country
Each month, Hunger Free America will highlight a best practice in anti-hunger by groups across the country. This month we will highlight Elena Greenberg, an AmeriCorps member from FoodCorps. FoodCorps is a national service program which seeks to connect children to healthy food in low-income communities.

Elena is serving in Prescott, Arizona with the Prescott Farmer's Market. She does educational classes at the market and does work at a few local schools. At each school she does Garden Club and teaches in some classes.

Elena makes an effort to connect with the kids not only in the garden and classroom, but in the cafeteria as well. After harvesting the fresh vegetables grown in the gardens she brings them to the cafeteria where all students are welcome to try a sample. This gives her the chance to engage students on their eating habits and encourage them to make healthy choices.

USDA National Hunger Clearinghouse

Hunger Free America is operating the USDA National Hunger Clearinghouse Database as well as the National Hunger Hotline.
  • The National Hunger Hotline is a great resource for people needing assistance accessing the online database. Anyone can call in between the hours of 8 AM and 8 PM EST, to talk to a person about the food resources near them in English or Spanish.
  • During summer months, the hotline provides information about meal sites where children 18 years old and under can get free, nutritious meals through the USDA Summer Food Service Program.
  • If you are an emergency food provider and would like to be added to the National Clearinghouse Database, follow this link: http://nhc.fns.usda.gov/nhc/submit
The hotline can be reached at 1-866-3-HUNGRY (1-866-348-6479) or 1-877-8-HAMBRE (1-877-842-6273) for Spanish, from Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.
