Five New Success Stories
|
In fiscal year 2015, 61 grantees received approximately $126 million in Preventive Health and Health Services (PHHS) Block Grant funds. CDC has just released a set of success stories that highlight several of these grantees’ accomplishments. Visit
Grantee Highlights to learn how Alaska, Kentucky, Missouri, Utah, and the District of Columbia are using their Block Grant funds to support critical programs and address public health challenges in their jurisdictions.
The
PHHS Block Grant, managed by CDC’s Division of Public Health Performance Improvement within the Office for State, Tribal, Local and Territorial Support, provides funding to 50 states, 2 American Indian tribes, 8 US territories, and the District of Columbia.
With this funding, the grantees are able to create new programs, enhance current programs, respond more quickly to crises, and provide funds where no other government funds previously existed.

This week’s
Science Clips feature focuses on the science supporting sodium reduction. Sodium increases blood pressure, and high blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, two leading causes of death in the United States. The totality of
scientific evidence supports lowering sodium consumption from current levels. In light of the overwhelming body of credible, high-quality scientific evidence, sodium reduction is an achievable, effective, and critically important public health strategy to
reduce blood pressure and prevent heart attacks and strokes. This Science Clips features some of the key scientific papers that highlight the importance of population wide sodium reduction. Papers include scientific studies and analyses of dietary sodium

Extreme heat events, or heat waves, are a leading cause of weather-related deaths in the United States. Between 1999 and 2012, extreme heat caused more than 7,400 heat-related deaths in the United States. Extreme heat increases hospital admissions for heart
disease, respiratory disease, and stroke.
